Segond 21 Elie répondit au chef de cinquantaine : « Si je suis un homme de Dieu, que le feu descende du ciel et te dévore, toi et tes 50 hommes ! » Et le feu descendit du ciel et le dévora, lui et ses 50 hommes.

World English Bible Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky, and consume you and your fifty!" Fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.

Feu (esch) et homme (isch) sont deux mots qui se ressemblent beaucoup en hébreu : Ce qui descendra, ce sera le feu et non pas l'homme. Si cet ordre du prophète avait été un acte de vengeance personnelle, Dieu ne l'aurait pas ratifié. Mais en venant saisir l'homme de Dieu pour le ramener captif comme un criminel, c'était à Dieu lui-même que s'en prenait cette troupe, et au milieu de ce peuple qui l'oubliait, Dieu devait punir sévèrement cet outrage et revendiquer avec éclat son honneur foulé aux pieds.
