World English Bible Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper room that was in Samaria, and was sick. So he sent messengers, and said to them, "Go, inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover of this sickness."

Le treillis : probablement une fenêtre à barreaux ; d'autres entendent : une trappe.

Baal-Zébub, le maître des mouches. Toutes les variétés de Baal, Baal-Berith, Baal-Péor, Baal-Tséphon, représentent sous des faces diverses le Soleil, le dieu suprême du panthéon sémitique. Baal-Zébub est le soleil en tant que producteur des mouches, celui qui, en conséquence, peut aussi en débarrasser les hommes. En Grèce et à Rome, où Jupiter était le dieu correspondant au Baal de l'Orient, on adorait un Jupiter chasseur des mouches, et dans les fêtes d'Apollon le culte des mouches avait aussi une place. Les Juifs changèrent la dernière lettre de ce mot, b, en l, de manière à lui faire signifier dieu du fumier, et c'est ainsi que le mot Béelzébul est devenu le nom de l'esprit malin.
