Maladrerie ; le mot hébreu signifie proprement : maison d'émancipation, où l'on vit loin du monde et de ses exigences ; de là, une demeure isolée ; elle fut sans doute construite exprès pour ce roi exclu de la société humaine.

En quoi avait consisté le crime si sévèrement puni et que suppose ce mot : L'Eternel le frappa ? Le récit 2Chroniques 26.16 et suivants répond à cette question. La loi avait établi une séparation profonde entre la royauté et le sacerdoce, en attachant la première à la tribu de Juda et à la famille de David, le second à la tribu de Lévi et à la famille d'Aaron ; comparez Nombres 18.7 et suivants. La sacrificature et la royauté ne devaient être réunies que sur la tète du Messie (Psaumes 110.4 ; comparez Genèse 14.18). En essayant de renverser le mur de séparation que Dieu avait élevé entre les deux principaux pouvoirs établis au sein de son peuple, Ozias ruinait par la base la constitution théocratique ; il empiétait sur le temps où les deux couronnes royale et sacerdotale seraient réunies sur la tête d'un plus grand que lui ; comparez Zacharie 6.12-13 et Hébreux 7.11-17. On comprend ainsi le châtiment terrible dont il fut frappé.
