La bible annotée Commentaire de Matthew Henry De Ribla Néco se rendit à Carkémis, où il voulait passer l'Euphrate et où il rencontra Nébucadnetsar, fils de Nabopolassar, commandant de l'armée babylonienne, qui lui infligea une complète, défaite, en 606, et mit ainsi fin à la domination égyptienne en Syrie. Jéhojakim devint par là même son vassal.Monta. D'après l'historien Bérose, Nébucadnetsar poursuivit après la bataille de Carkémis la conquête de tous les Etats syriens jusqu'aux frontières de l'Egypte, mais fut rappelé à Babylone par la nouvelle de la mort de son père avant d'avoir pu attaquer l'Egypte. Ce fut alors sans doute qu'il occupa pour la première fois Jérusalem et fit de Jéhojakim son tributaire.
