Segond 21 A son époque, Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone, partit en campagne. Jojakim lui fut asservi pendant 3 ans, mais il se révolta de nouveau contre lui.

World English Bible In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he turned and rebelled against him.

De Ribla Néco se rendit à Carkémis, où il voulait passer l'Euphrate et où il rencontra Nébucadnetsar, fils de Nabopolassar, commandant de l'armée babylonienne, qui lui infligea une complète, défaite, en 606, et mit ainsi fin à la domination égyptienne en Syrie. Jéhojakim devint par là même son vassal.

Monta. D'après l'historien Bérose, Nébucadnetsar poursuivit après la bataille de Carkémis la conquête de tous les Etats syriens jusqu'aux frontières de l'Egypte, mais fut rappelé à Babylone par la nouvelle de la mort de son père avant d'avoir pu attaquer l'Egypte. Ce fut alors sans doute qu'il occupa pour la première fois Jérusalem et fit de Jéhojakim son tributaire. Il est même dit, 2Chroniques 36.6, que Nébucadnetsar le jeta dans les fers pour le conduire à Babylone. Mais, comme il n'est point dit qu'il l'y conduisit, en effet, il est probable qu'il lui fit grâce et le laissa à Jérusalem comme son vassal.

Se rebella, comptant évidemment qu'une expédition égyptienne viendrait à son secours (Jérémie 2.36).

De nouveau : non pas dans le sens de derechef, mais dans le sens qu'a si souvent le terme hébreu : en prenant une position nouvelle.

Si Jojakim avait servi l'Éternel, il n'aurait pas été ainsi assujetti à Nebucadnetsar. S'il avait été, dans sa servitude, satisfait de son sort, et s'il s'était soumis à la Parole de Dieu, il n'aurait pas été dans une si triste situation ; mais en se rebellant contre Babylone, il fut confronté aux ennuis les plus graves.

On peut remarquer que les nations dans le besoin, déplorent en fait les péchés et la conduite douteuse de leurs ancêtres. Les épreuves annoncées par le ciel s'accompliront aussi certainement que les bonnes promesses divines, si les pécheurs ne se repentent pas.

      15 Yahweh, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place:
      16 but they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Yahweh arose against his people, until there was no remedy.
      17 Therefore he brought on them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or gray-headed: he gave them all into his hand.
      18 All the vessels of God's house, great and small, and the treasures of the house of Yahweh, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon.
      19 They burnt God's house, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels of it.
      20 He carried those who had escaped from the sword away to Babylon; and they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
      21 to fulfill the word of Yahweh by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. As long as it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.
