World English Bible As for the people who were left in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor.

Guédalia. Fils d'Achikam (22.12), de cet homme de Dieu qui avait sauvé Jérémie (Jérémie 26.24), Guédalia était de ceux qui avaient écoulé les exhortations du prophète, et qui l'avaient protégé (Jérémie 39.14 ; 40.6).

Le roi de Babylone nomma Guedalia, gouverneur et protecteur des Juifs qui restaient dans le pays de Juda. Les perspectives de paix future étant complètement occultées au reste du peuple de Juda, personne ne pouvait savoir quand on pourrait la retrouver. Ismaël tua Guedalia et tous ceux qui l'entouraient, malgré l'avis défavorable de Jérémie ; tout le peuple qui restait s'enfuit ensuite en Égypte. Ainsi se terminait l'odyssée de ces Juifs : elle était la conséquence de leur propre folie et de leur désobéissance ; voir Jer 40:1-45 :5. Jojakin fut alors libéré de prison, où il avait séjourné pendant trente-sept ans.

Personne ne peut dire que la paix et la pratique du bien ne reparaîtront jamais, quand on voit tout le mal qui peut régner ici-bas : les plus malheureux ne savent pas à quel point la Providence est capable de modifier le cours de leur vie, ni l'heureuse destinée qu'Elle leur réserve, malgré les nombreuses afflictions qu'ils peuvent traverser.

Même en ce monde, le Sauveur apporte un soulagement au pécheur affligé qui Le cherche, Il lui accorde de goûter aux prémices des joies spirituelles, joies que Lui seul est capable d'accorder éternellement !

Seul le péché nous fait du mal ; Jésus est l'Unique qui puisse faire du bien aux pécheurs repentants !

      9 Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, Don't be afraid to serve the Chaldeans: dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.
      10 As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who shall come to us: but you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.
      11 Likewise when all the Jews who were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah, and that he had set over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan;
      12 then all the Jews returned out of all places where they were driven, and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruits very much.
