Naaman, le général en chef de l’armée du roi de Syrie, était un homme que son maître, le roi de Syrie, tenait en haute estime et auquel il accordait toute sa faveur, car, par lui, l’Eternel avait accordé la victoire aux Syriens. Hélas, ce valeureux guerrier était lépreux.

Segond 21 Naaman, le chef de l'armée du roi de Syrie, jouissait de la faveur et de l’estime de son seigneur, car c'était par lui que l'Eternel avait donné la victoire aux Syriens. Toutefois, cet homme fort et vaillant était lépreux.

World English Bible Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him Yahweh had given victory to Syria: he was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.

La victoire à la Syrie. Non sur ses ennemis, en général, mais spécialement sur Israël. Cette jeune prisonnière et les incursions dont parle le verset 2 sont la preuve d'hostilités récentes entre Damas et Samarie.

Le vainqueur doit aller demander la guérison aux vaincus.

Lépreux : d'après le verset 11, la maladie ne faisait que commencer.

Bien que les Syriens soient un peuple idolâtre, oppressant les enfants d'Israël, la délivrance de Naaman mentionnée au premier verset de ce texte, fut attribuée à l'Éternel. Il en est ainsi dans toute l'Écriture : les auteurs qui décrivent l'histoire commune, montrent clairement que Dieu n'était pas forcément vénéré par tous les peuples. Ni la grandeur d'un homme, ni son honneur, ne peuvent lui épargner les calamités les plus terribles ici-bas : on rencontre en effet beaucoup de malades et de fous... parmi les grands de ce monde !

En fait, chaque personne a ses propres défauts, qui l'amoindrissent et l'affaiblissent plus ou moins, ternissant sa renommée et son bien-être.

Cette petite fille bien modeste, au service de la femme de Naaman, pouvait témoigner de la présence du célèbre prophète se trouvant chez les Israélites. Les enfants devraient dès leur plus jeune âge et en tous lieux, parler des œuvres merveilleuses du Seigneur. Bien qu'elle soit en captivité, enrôlée par force, cette jeune Israélite, fidèle servante, désira le bien-être de son maître et le voir en bonne santé ; combien les domestiques qui sont volontairement au service de leurs supérieurs, devraient-ils avoir les mêmes sentiments ! Les serviteurs peuvent être de véritables bénédictions dans les familles où ils travaillent, en témoignant de leur expérience avec le Seigneur, de Sa Gloire et de la grandeur des prophètes.

Naaman, en raison de sa maladie, n'a pas dédaigné les conseils de cette jeune fille. Il serait bon de voir les hommes être plus sensibles au fardeau de leur péché, qu'ils ne le sont au sujet des maladies corporelles qui peuvent les atteindre ! Et quand ces âmes recherchent les bénédictions que le Seigneur envoie, en réponse aux prières de Ses fidèles, elles ne trouvent en fait rien qui puisse les satisfaire, à moins qu'elles ne s'approchent de Lui en toute humilité et non pas comme des « seigneurs » exigeants, désirant « négocier » !
