Tout dans la conduite d'Elisée a pour but d'amener Naaman à la connaissance de Dieu. Il y avait une cure à opérer chez lui, plus importante que celle qu'il venait chercher. C'est à celle-là que vise le fidèle serviteur de Dieu : La première condition pour cela est qu'il s'humilie et reconnaisse la vanité de toutes ses grandeurs. De là l'absence de toute forme obséquieuse de la part du prophète qui le traite comme le plus pauvre des hommes. De là aussi le moyen de guérison qu'il lui ordonne, un bain tout simple. Mais remarquons les mots dans le Jourdain, le fleuve national qui est pour Israël ce que le Nil est pour l'Egypte, le fleuve sacré, représentant de la bénédiction divine.

Sept fois : le nombre sacré ; comparez Lévitique 14.8.
