World English Bible Leave out the court which is outside of the temple, and don't measure it, for it has been given to the nations. They will tread the holy city under foot for forty-two months.

Le parvis qui est hors du temple est le parvis extérieur, qui entourait le parvis intérieur. Il représente la Jérusalem terrestre, avec le temple matériel, l'Israël selon la chair, qui a l'apparence du peuple de Dieu, mais ne l'est pas en réalité.

Laisse-le en dehors, grec jette-le dehors, signifie le rejet qui voue à la destruction. (Matthieu 8.12 ; Jean 6.37)

Il est donné aux nations et elles fouleront aux pieds la sainte cité. Ce sont les termes mêmes dans lesquels Jésus annonce la prise de Jérusalem par les Romains et caractérise la condition de cette ville pendant la période qu'il appelle "les temps des nations." (Luc 21.24) Cette coïncidence nous oblige à voir dans la présente vision la prédiction du même fait. Elle en fixe la date avant l'an 70.

Les nations fouleront aux pieds la sainte cité pendant quarante-deux mois. C'est l'équivalent des douze cent soixante jours que durera la mission des deux témoins. (verset 3) Et ces deux nombres, qui égalent trois ans et demi, correspondent à l'expression de Daniel : (Daniel 7.25 ; 12.7) "un temps, des temps et la moitié d'un temps," que Jean emploie lui-même dans Apocalypse 12.14. La même durée est assignée au séjour de la femme dans le désert (Apocalypse 12.6) et à la guerre que la bête fait au peuple de Dieu. (Apocalypse 13.5)

Plusieurs prennent ces trois ans et demi à la lettre ; les uns les mettent dans le passé, au temps de l'auteur, qui aurait attendu la fin du monde peu après la ruine de Jérusalem d'autres les placent dans les derniers temps, les appliquant au règne de l'Antéchrist. Mais ces nombres sont symboliques : trois et demi est la moitié de sept. Ils embrassent la période appelée par Jésus "les temps des nations" et qui s'étend de la ruine de Jérusalem à son retour dans la gloire. C'est pour l'Église le temps du témoignage et de l'épreuve. (verset 3 et suivants)

On peut se demander seulement si, dans la pensée de Jean, les quarante-deux mois et les douze cent soixante jours sont deux périodes successives, et si, par conséquent, les temps des gentils forment sept années prophétiques, ou si ces deux nombres désignent la même période, ce qui donnerait une durée de trois ans et demi à ces temps des nations.
