Le cantique proclame grandes et admirables les œuvres (Psaumes 111.2 ; 139.14) du Seigneur Dieu, le dominateur souverain, (Apocalypse 11.17) justes et véritables, c'est-à-dire vraiment divines, toutes ses voies. (Psaumes 145.17)

Il appelle Dieu roi des nations, comme Jérémie 10.7 ; d'après Sin, C, il faudrait lire : roi des siècles. Il emprunte aussi à Jérémie 10.7 les mots : qui ne craindrait, dans la question qui ouvre verset 4.

Deux raisons sont données de craindre et de glorifier le nom du Seigneur : seul il est saint, et toutes les nations viendront et se prosterneront devant lui. (Psaumes 86.9) Ce dernier fait est motivé par la manifestation de ses jugements.

Les jugements de Dieu, les ordonnances et les lois morales qu'il a établies (c'est le sens du mot dans Luc 1.6 ; Romains 1.32 ; 2.26) sont méconnus et transgressés par les pécheurs ; mais quand Dieu les manifestera en leur donnant leur suprême sanction au grand jour des rétributions, toutes les nations devront se prosterner devant lui.
