World English Bible The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was darkened. They gnawed their tongues because of the pain,

Le trône de la bête désigne Rome la capitale de l'empire. (Apocalypse 13.1,2) Ce n'est pas seulement la capitale, mais tout l'empire (son royaume) qui fut plongé dans les ténèbres.

Ces ténèbres ne sont pas la conséquence de l'obscurcissement des luminaires célestes, comme dans Apocalypse 8.12 ; elles sont provoquées directement par la coupe répandue sur le trône. (Comparer Exode 10.22) Elles ne pouvaient causer par elles-mêmes que des angoisses morales ; mais verset 11 montre que l'effet des premières plaies persistait, et c'est ce qui explique que les hommes se mordaient la langue de douleur.
