Apocalypse 16.16

καὶ συνήγαγεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον Ἑβραϊστὶ Ἁρμαγεδών.
Les esprits mauvais réunissent les rois à un seul endroit. En hébreu, on appelle cet endroit « Harmaguédon ».
Ils les rassemblèrent dans le lieu appelé en hébreu Harmaguédon.

Après la parenthèse de verset 15, l'auteur revient aux esprits des démons et les montre accomplissant leur mission auprès des rois : et ils les assemblèrent dans le lieu qui s'appelle, en hébreu, Harmaguédon.

Les mots en hébreu invitent à traduire le nom de Harmaguédon par montagne (en hébreu : har) de Meguido.

Dans l'Ancien Testament, il est parlé des "eaux de Meguido" (Juges 5.19) et de "la vallée de Meguido." (Zacharie 12.11) Cette localité était dans la plaine de Jizréhel. Si, dans l'Apocalypse, il est parlé de la montagne de Meguido, ce n'est pas que l'auteur ait en vue une montagne voisine, le Thabor, par exemple ; c'est plutôt pour marquer que ce nom est symbolique et ne doit pas être pris comme une indication géographique.

Meguido éveille un double souvenir : celui de la victoire de Sisera sur Jabin, chantée par Débora, (Juges 5) et celui de la défaite et de la mort de Josias. (2Rois 23.29 ; comparez Zacharie 12.11) C'est sans doute le premier de ces faits qui a inspiré le choix du nom de Meguido pour designer le lieu de la grande bataille où seront vaincus les rois ennemis du règne de Christ.
