Deutéronome 13.2

Peut-être un prophète apparaîtra-t-il un jour parmi vous, ou un visionnaire qui vous donnera un signe miraculeux ou vous annoncera un prodige.

World English Bible and the sign or the wonder come to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, "Let us go after other gods" (which you have not known) "and let us serve them";

Le signe prédit peut se réaliser ou le prodige accompli rester inexplicable, sans que ce soit une preuve de l'origine divine de la prophétie ou du songe. Israël, qui avait un goût naturel pour ce genre de manifestations divines (1Corinthiens 1.22), devait apprendre à s'en méfier et se rappeler que de tels faits doivent être envisagés comme des pièges, toutes les fois qu'ils sont accompagnés d'un enseignement en désaccord avec les principes élémentaires de la conscience ou de la révélation. Le témoignage de la loi, que contredit l'imposteur, doit l'emporter sur le témoignage même des yeux.
