10 à 20 Ménagements en cas de siège d'une ville ennemie.

10 et 11 En premier lieu, lui offrir de se rendre et, si elle accepte, l'épargner et lui imposer un tribut annuel ou (Exode 1.11) des corvées.

12 à 14 En second lieu, si elle résiste, ne tuer que les hommes armés ; épargner tout le reste. Ainsi sont interdits aux Israélites ces massacres de populations entières auxquels on se livrait dans l'antiquité.

Les Israélites reçoivent ici les directives au sujet des nations contre lesquelles ils sont entrés en guerre. C'est pour ainsi dire, une image de la grâce divine vis-à-vis des pécheurs. La paix était d'abord proposée à la ville en question, en vue de chercher d'abord la réconciliation. Cela nous montre quelle doit être notre conduite, face à notre prochain. Quel que soit le nombre de partisans pour la guerre, nous devons d'abord rechercher la paix.

Aucun habitant des villes conquises par Israël ne devait rester libre. Tous ceux qui avaient des penchants pour l'idolâtrie devaient être éliminés, pour ne pas nuire au peuple hébreu. Si toutes ces ordonnances ne sont plus tout à fait d'actualité aujourd'hui, l'Amour de Christ, quant à lui, les supplante.

Les horreurs de la guerre ne peuvent que remplir le cœur de souvenirs angoissants ; elles ne font que démontrer la méchanceté de l'homme, la puissance de Satan, mais aussi la justice divine parfaite, par l'envoi de fléaux sur le monde.

Dans quelle situation terrible se trouvent ceux qui sont en conflit avec le Créateur, et qui refusent de Lui rendre toute l'adoration qui Lui est due ! Ils ne peuvent s'attendre qu'à la ruine ! Le nombre ou la puissance de nos ennemis éventuels ne doit nous inquiéter en aucun cas ; il en est de même au sujet de la faiblesse que l'on pourrait éprouver : elle ne doit pas nous faire trembler.

Le Seigneur nous sauvera toujours ; avant de partir au combat, ne prenons pas à nos côtés ceux qui ne sont pas motivés, ceux qui marchent selon les principes de ce monde ou qui renient la Puissance de la Croix. Ce passage recommande aux Israélites de ne pas détruire les arbres fruitiers des villes assiégées. Dieu est le meilleur Ami de l'homme ; pour notre bien-être, nous avons grand intérêt à suivre les commandements de la Parole ; nos appétits pour le monde, ainsi que nos passions, sont en fait nos ennemis. Beaucoup de préceptes divins nous préservent, principalement quand il s'agit de notre vie ici-bas.

Les Juifs avaient bien compris qu'il ne fallait pas gâcher les avantages que l'Éternel leur avait octroyés. Toute chose crée par Dieu est bonne. On ne doit pas s'en abstenir, mais non plus en abuser. Nous pouvons très bien vivre, sans gaspiller quoi que ce soit !
