Deutéronome 21.22

Cadavres des criminels. L'idée de l'exécution capitale est le seul lien qui unisse ce passage au précédent.

Et que tu l'auras pendu. La pendaison suit l'exécution et n'est pas le supplice lui-même, mais une aggravation de peine, un opprobre infligé au cadavre du malfaiteur pour certains crimes extraordinaires (blasphème, idolâtrie, d'après les rabbins). Au lieu d'être immédiatement enseveli, le corps du criminel était mis en évidence et suspendu à un arbre ou à un poteau, comme un objet d'horreur pour les hommes et un monument du déplaisir divin.

D'après la loi de Moïse, le fait de toucher un cadavre rendait impur ; en conséquence, les hommes mis à mort ne devaient pas rester pendus plusieurs jours, afin de ne pas souiller la terre que Dieu avait donnée en héritage à Israël.

Cela nous rappelle dans quelle situation, Christ se trouvait : « Celui qui est pendu, est malédiction de Dieu » ; Il ne pouvait y avoir de pire état de disgrâce et de reproche, aux yeux de l'Éternel. Ceux qui voient un tel homme, pendu, peuvent déduire que ce dernier se trouve entre ciel et terre, étant comme rejeté par ces deux éléments.

Moïse, poussé par l'Esprit, mentionne cette phrase sur la pendaison, pour bien montrer que rien ne pouvait exprimer davantage la malédiction divine ; cela concerne aussi la mise à mort que Christ a connue : Il a subi ainsi la pire des malédictions mentionnées par la loi, et ce, pour notre salut ; cela nous prouve Son Amour, et ne peut que nous encourager à placer notre foi en Lui !
