Vous comparaissez tous aujourd'hui devant l'Éternel votre Dieu, vos chefs et vos tribus, vos anciens et vos officiers, tout homme d'Israël,
vos enfants et vos femmes. Il y a même les étrangers installés chez vous dans le camp et qui sont chargés de couper du bois ou de puiser de l’eau pour vous.

Moïse, sachant bien qu'il ne pourra célébrer lui-même le renouvellement solennel de l'alliance, qui doit avoir lieu à Sichem, accomplit ici l'acte religieux qui en est comme le prélude.

L'alliance nationale faite avec Israël dans ce passage, est une image de celle que Dieu a passée avec le croyant, et de celle représentée par la dispensation de l'évangile.

Ceux qui ont été capables d'accepter le don de grâce et de miséricorde, offerts en Jésus-Christ, renonçant à eux-mêmes pour Lui appartenir, devraient saisir chaque opportunité pour réactiver toute relation et obligation envers Lui, marchant ainsi selon Ses préceptes. Le pécheur est ici décrit, comme quelqu'un dont le cœur a abandonné son Créateur ; le mal commence alors à œuvrer en lui, cherchant à détourner cet homme, de Celui qui l'a créé, pour servir les idoles.

De nos jours, les hommes sont tentés de commettre le même péché, quand ils succombent à leurs tentations et à leurs convoitises. Ils sont alors comme des racines atteintes par la gale et la vermine ! Ils sont comme les mauvaises herbes, qui finissent par envahir un champ entier! Satan peut, pour un temps, masquer le goût amer d'un péché, de façon à ce que nous ne puissions en discerner le danger, mais tôt ou tard, la réalité apparaît.

Remarquez à quel point le pécheur se sent en sécurité dans son Iniquité ! Bien qu'il perçoive les avertissements dus à sa conduite, il se croit à l'abri de la colère divine. Il y a rarement menace divine plus terrible, dans la Parole de Dieu, que celle prévue pour cet état du cœur.

Oh, pécheurs présomptueux, lisez bien ce passage, et tremblez ! C'est vraiment une déclaration de la colère divine, à l'égard de l'impiété et du manque de droiture des hommes.
