Fils de Tséruja, soeur de David, et frère de Joab et d'Asaël (2Sa 2:18,1Ch 2:16) ; neveu, compagnon et officier de David, était d'un caractère violent. Accompagna David, au camp de Saül et lui proposa de tuer le roi endormi (1Sa 26:6-8). D'après 2Sa 3:30, il se serait associé au geste homicide de son frère Joab contre Abner (texte douteux, voir verset 27).

Lors de la victoire de Joab sur les Ammonites et les Syriens, Abisaï commandait en second (2Sa 10:9-14 =1Ch 19:10-15) Il réprima avec Joab et Ittaï la révolte d'Absalom (2Sa 18:2 et suivants), et avec Joab celle de Séba (2Sa 2 o 6 et suivants).

Lors d'une guerre contre les Philistins, il sauva la vie à David (2Sa 21:15-17) et comptait comme l'un des principaux parmi les fameux « trente ». On lui attribuait même le massacre de trois cents ennemis (2Sa 23:18-19). Malgré les services qu'ils lui rendirent, David craignit parfois la puissance et le caractère violent de Joab et d'Abisaï (2Sa 3:39).

    • 1 Samuel 26

      6 David prit la parole et s'adressa à Achimélec, le Hittite, et à Abishaï, fils de Tseruja et frère de Joab. Il leur dit : « Qui veut descendre avec moi dans le camp vers Saül ? » Abishaï répondit : « Moi, je descendrai avec toi. »
      7 David et Abishaï se rendirent de nuit vers la troupe. Saül était couché et dormait au milieu du camp, et sa lance était fichée en terre près de sa tête. Abner et le reste de la troupe étaient couchés autour de lui.
      8 Abishaï dit à David : « Dieu livre aujourd'hui ton ennemi entre tes mains. Laisse-moi donc le frapper avec ma lance. Je le clouerai à terre d'un seul coup, je n’aurai pas à m’y reprendre à deux fois. »

      2 Samuel 2

      1 Après cela, David consulta l'Eternel en disant : « Dois-je monter dans une des villes de Juda ? » L'Eternel lui répondit : « Monte. » David dit : « Où dois-je monter ? » Et l'Eternel répondit : « A Hébron. »
      2 David y monta alors avec ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jizreel et Abigaïl de Carmel, la femme de Nabal.
      3 David y fit aussi monter ceux qui étaient à ses côtés, chacun avec sa famille, et ils habitèrent dans les villes qui dépendaient d'Hébron.
      4 Les hommes de Juda vinrent et c’est là qu’ils consacrèrent par onction David comme roi sur la communauté de Juda. On informa David que c'étaient les habitants de Jabès en Galaad qui avaient enterré Saül.
      5 Il leur envoya alors des messagers pour leur dire : « Soyez bénis de l'Eternel, puisque vous avez fait preuve d’une telle bonté envers Saül, votre maître, et que vous l'avez enterré.
      6 Que l'Eternel agisse maintenant envers vous avec bonté et fidélité. Moi aussi, je vous ferai du bien, puisque vous avez agi de cette manière.
      7 Que vos mains se fortifient ! Soyez de vaillants hommes ! En effet, votre maître Saül est mort et c'est moi que la communauté de Juda a désigné par onction comme roi sur elle. »
      8 Cependant Abner, fils de Ner et chef de l'armée de Saül, avait pris Ish-Bosheth, le fils de Saül, et l’avait fait passer à Mahanaïm.
      9 Il l'avait proclamé roi sur Galaad, sur les Asérites, sur Jizreel, sur Ephraïm, sur Benjamin et sur tout Israël.
      10 Ish-Bosheth, fils de Saül, était âgé de 40 ans lorsqu'il devint roi d'Israël et il régna 2 ans. Seule la communauté de Juda suivit David.
      11 La période pendant laquelle David régna à Hébron sur la communauté de Juda fut de 7 ans et 6 mois.
      12 Abner, fils de Ner, et les serviteurs d'Ish-Bosheth, le fils de Saül, sortirent de Mahanaïm en direction de Gabaon.
      13 Joab, le fils de Tseruja, et les serviteurs de David se mirent eux aussi en marche. Ils se rencontrèrent près de l'étang de Gabaon et ils s'arrêtèrent, les uns d’un côté de l'étang, les autres de l’autre.
      14 Abner dit à Joab : « Que les jeunes se lèvent donc et combattent devant nous ! » Joab répondit : « Qu'ils se lèvent ! »
      15 Ils se levèrent et s'avancèrent en nombre égal : 12 pour Benjamin et Ish-Bosheth, le fils de Saül, et 12 serviteurs de David.
      16 Chacun attrapa son adversaire par la tête et lui enfonça son épée dans le côté ; ils tombèrent tous ensemble. On appela alors cet endroit, qui se trouve près de Gabaon, Helkath-Hatsurim.
      17 Il y eut ce jour-là un combat très rude, au cours duquel Abner et les hommes d'Israël furent battus par les serviteurs de David.
      18 Les trois fils de Tseruja, Joab, Abishaï et Asaël, se trouvaient là. Asaël était agile comme une gazelle sauvage.
      19 Il poursuivit Abner sans se détourner de lui pour aller à droite ou à gauche.
      20 Abner regarda derrière lui et dit : « Est-ce toi, Asaël ? » Il répondit : « C'est moi. »
      21 Abner lui dit : « Détourne-toi à droite ou à gauche ! Attrape un de ces jeunes gens et prends ses dépouilles. » Mais Asaël ne voulut pas se détourner de lui.
      22 Abner insista auprès d’Asaël : « Ecarte-toi de moi ! Pourquoi devrais-je te frapper et t'abattre ? Comment pourrais-je ensuite regarder ton frère Joab en face ? »
      23 Mais Asaël refusa de s’écarter. Alors Abner le frappa au ventre avec l'extrémité inférieure de sa lance, et la lance sortit par-derrière. Il tomba et mourut sur place. Tous ceux qui arrivaient à l'endroit où Asaël était tombé mort s'y arrêtaient.
      24 Joab et Abishaï poursuivirent Abner, et le soleil se couchait quand ils arrivèrent à la colline d'Amma, qui se trouve en face de Guiach, sur le chemin du désert de Gabaon.
      25 Les Benjaminites se rassemblèrent derrière Abner pour former un seul bloc et ils s'arrêtèrent au sommet d'une colline.
      26 Abner cria à Joab : « L'épée va-t-elle nous dévorer indéfiniment ? Ne sais-tu pas que cela débouchera sur de l'amertume ? Quand diras-tu enfin à ton peuple de ne plus poursuivre ses frères ? »
      27 Joab répondit : « Dieu est vivant ! Si tu n'avais pas parlé, l’armée n'aurait pas cessé de poursuivre ses frères avant le matin. »
      28 Il sonna alors de la trompette et toute l’armée s'arrêta. Ils cessèrent de poursuivre Israël et de combattre.
      29 Abner et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit dans la plaine. Ils passèrent le Jourdain, traversèrent tout le Bithron et arrivèrent à Mahanaïm.
      30 Joab mit fin à leur poursuite d'Abner et rassembla toute l’armée. Il manquait 19 serviteurs de David et Asaël.
      31 Cependant, les serviteurs de David avaient frappé à mort 360 des hommes de Benjamin et d'Abner.
      32 Ils emportèrent Asaël et l'enterrèrent dans le tombeau de son père à Bethléhem. Puis Joab et ses hommes marchèrent toute la nuit, et ils arrivèrent à Hébron au lever du jour.

      30 Ainsi, Joab et son frère Abishaï tuèrent Abner parce qu'il avait donné la mort à leur frère Asaël, à Gabaon, dans la bataille.
      39 Je suis encore faible, même si j'ai été consacré roi par onction, et ces hommes, les fils de Tseruja, sont trop puissants pour moi. Que l'Eternel traite conformément à sa méchanceté celui qui fait le mal ! »

      2 Samuel 10

      9 Joab vit qu'il avait à combattre par-devant et par-derrière. Il choisit alors sur toute l'élite d'Israël un groupe qu'il plaça en face des Syriens.
      10 Il plaça le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abishaï, pour qu’il s’oppose aux Ammonites.
      11 Il lui dit : « Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, et si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je viendrai au tien.
      12 Sois fort, montrons du courage pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon ! »
      13 Joab s'avança avec sa troupe pour attaquer les Syriens, et ceux-ci prirent la fuite devant lui.
      14 Quand les Ammonites virent que les Syriens s’étaient enfuis, ils prirent eux aussi la fuite devant Abishaï et rentrèrent dans la ville. Joab s'éloigna des Ammonites et revint à Jérusalem.

      2 Samuel 18

      2 Il plaça un tiers du peuple sous le commandement de Joab, un tiers sous celui d'Abishaï, fils de Tseruja et frère de Joab, et un tiers sous celui d'Ittaï, de Gath. Puis le roi dit au peuple : « Moi aussi, je veux partir en campagne avec vous. »

      2 Samuel 21

      15 Les Philistins firent encore la guerre à Israël. David descendit avec ses serviteurs et ils livrèrent combat contre les Philistins. David eut une défaillance,
      16 et Jishbi-Benob, un descendant de Rapha, eut l’idée de le tuer. Il avait une lance en bronze qui pesait plus de 3 kilos et il était muni d'une épée neuve.
      17 Abishaï, fils de Tseruja, vint au secours de David et frappa le Philistin à mort. Alors les hommes de David prêtèrent le serment suivant : « Tu ne sortiras plus avec nous pour combattre et ainsi tu ne risqueras pas d’éteindre la lampe d'Israël. »

      2 Samuel 23

      18 Abishaï, le frère de Joab et le fils de Tseruja, était le chef des trois. Il brandit sa lance sur 300 hommes et les tua. Il eut une grande réputation parmi les trois.
      19 Il était le plus considéré des trois et il fut leur chef, mais il n'égala pas les trois premiers.

      16 Leurs sœurs étaient Tseruja et Abigaïl. Fils de Tseruja : Abishaï, Joab et Asaël, ce qui fait 3.

      7 So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the place of the wagons, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people lay around him.
      8 Then Abishai said to David, "God has delivered up your enemy into your hand this day. Now therefore please let me strike him with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time."

      2 Samuel 2

      1 It happened after this, that David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?" Yahweh said to him, "Go up." David said, "Where shall I go up?" He said, "To Hebron."
      2 So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
      3 David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.
      4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, saying, "The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul."
      5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, "Blessed are you by Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.
      6 Now may Yahweh show loving kindness and truth to you. I also will reward you for this kindness, because you have done this thing.
      7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them."
      8 Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim;
      9 and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
      10 Ishbosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
      11 The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
      12 Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
      13 Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.
      14 Abner said to Joab, "Please let the young men arise and play before us!" Joab said, "Let them arise!"
      15 Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
      16 They each caught his opponent by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: therefore that place was called Helkath Hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.
      17 The battle was very severe that day: and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.
      18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.
      19 Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he didn't turn to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
      20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, "Is it you, Asahel?" He answered, "It is I."
      21 Abner said to him, "Turn aside to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor." But Asahel would not turn aside from following him.
      22 Abner said again to Asahel, "Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then should I hold up my face to Joab your brother?"
      23 However he refused to turn aside. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place. It happened, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.
      24 But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.
      25 The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.
      26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, "Shall the sword devour forever? Don't you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long shall it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?"
      27 Joab said, "As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother."
      28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more.
      29 Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.
      30 Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David's servants nineteen men and Asahel.
      31 But the servants of David had struck of Benjamin, and of Abner's men, so that three hundred sixty men died.
      32 They took up Asahel, and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.

      2 Samuel 3

      30 So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.
      39 I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too hard for me. May Yahweh reward the evildoer according to his wickedness."

      2 Samuel 10

      9 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
      10 The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.
      11 He said, "If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.
      12 Be courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the cities of our God; and Yahweh do that which seems good to him."
      13 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near to the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
      14 When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

      2 Samuel 18

      2 David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, "I will surely go forth with you myself also."

      2 Samuel 21

      15 The Philistines had war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines. David grew faint;
      16 and Ishbibenob, who was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being armed with a new sword, thought to have slain David.
      17 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah helped him, and struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, "You shall go no more out with us to battle, that you don't quench the lamp of Israel."

      2 Samuel 23

      18 Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. He lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three.
      19 Wasn't he most honorable of the three? therefore he was made their captain: however he didn't attain to the three.

      16 and their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three.
