AMATSIA

1. Roi de Juda de 799 à 784 environ. Fils de Joas, il tira vengeance des meurtriers de son père. Une campagne contre Édom lui valut la victoire de la « vallée du sel », au Sud de la mer Morte et la prise de Séla, c-à-d. Pétra ; il devenait ainsi maître de la route des caravanes vers la mer Rouge et du port d'Élath ; il pouvait participer au commerce de l'Arabie et même des Indes. D'autre part, ce prince voulut tirer parti de l'affaiblissement du royaume d'Israël aux prises sans succès avec les Araméens : Amatsia attaqua Joas, roi d'Israël, mais il fut fait prisonnier à Beth-Sémès, et Joas, perçant une brèche dans les remparts de Jérusalem, pilla la ville et le temple ; Juda redevenait vassal d'Israël. Amatsia trouva la mort en s'enfuyant devant un parti de conjurés. Son règne est raconté dans 2Ro 14:14,17-20,22 2Ch 25 amplifie ce récit et attribue la mort du roi à sa chute dans l'idolâtrie édomite.

2. « Prêtre » en chef du sanctuaire de Béthel sous Jéroboam 2 Am 7:10-17 dresse un tableau saisissant de sa rencontre avec le prophète-berger de Thékoa. Amatsia ayant rapporté au roi qu'Amos a osé « conspirer » au sein même du sanctuaire royal, et ayant congédié Amos en termes insultants, celui-ci affirme sa vocation divine et foudroie le prêtre des pires malédictions. C'est déjà l'opposition radicale entre la religion du sacerdoce et la spontanéité de l'inspiration prophétique.

      1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother's name was Jehoaddan, of Jerusalem.

      3 Now it happened, when the kingdom was established to him, that he killed his servants who had killed the king his father.
      4 But he didn't put their children to death, but did according to that which is written in the law in the book of Moses, as Yahweh commanded, saying, "The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers; but every man shall die for his own sin."
      5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and ordered them according to their fathers' houses, under captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, even all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and upward, and found them three hundred thousand chosen men, able to go forth to war, who could handle spear and shield.
      6 He hired also one hundred thousand mighty men of valor out of Israel for one hundred talents of silver.
      7 A man of God came to him, saying, "O king, don't let the army of Israel go with you; for Yahweh is not with Israel, with all the children of Ephraim.
      8 But if you will go, take action, be strong for the battle. God will overthrow you before the enemy; for God has power to help, and to overthrow."
      9 Amaziah said to the man of God, "But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel?" The man of God answered, "Yahweh is able to give you much more than this."
      10 Then Amaziah separated them, the army that had come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: therefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in fierce anger.
      11 Amaziah took courage, and led forth his people, and went to the Valley of Salt, and struck ten thousand of the children of Seir.
      12 The children of Judah carry away ten thousand alive, and brought them to the top of the rock, and threw them down from the top of the rock, so that they all were broken in pieces.
      13 But the men of the army whom Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell on the cities of Judah, from Samaria even to Beth Horon, and struck of them three thousand, and took much spoil.
      14 Now it happened, after that Amaziah had come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense to them.
      15 Therefore the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, who said to him, "Why have you sought after the gods of the people, which have not delivered their own people out of your hand?"
      16 It happened, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, "Have we made you one of the king's counselors? Stop! Why should you be struck down?" Then the prophet stopped, and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel."
      17 Then Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us look one another in the face."
      18 Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as his wife; then a wild animal that was in Lebanon passed by, and trampled down the thistle.
      19 You say to yourself that you have struck Edom; and your heart lifts you up to boast. Now stay at home. Why should you meddle with trouble, that you should fall, even you, and Judah with you?'"
      20 But Amaziah would not listen; for it was of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they had sought after the gods of Edom.
      21 So Joash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah.
      22 Judah was defeated by Israel; and they fled every man to his tent.
      23 Joash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, at Beth Shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
      24 He took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in God's house with Obed-Edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
      25 Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
      26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, aren't they written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
      27 Now from the time that Amaziah turned away from following Yahweh, they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. He fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and killed him there.
      28 They brought him on horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

      Amos 7

      10 Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words.
      11 For Amos says, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.'"
      12 Amaziah also said to Amos, "You seer, go, flee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:
      13 but don't prophesy again any more at Bethel; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house!"
      14 Then Amos answered Amaziah, "I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs;
      15 and Yahweh took me from following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'
      16 Now therefore listen to the word of Yahweh: 'You say, Don't prophesy against Israel, and don't preach against the house of Isaac.'
      17 Therefore thus says Yahweh: 'Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you yourself shall die in a land that is unclean, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land.'"

      1 Amassia devint roi à l’âge de vingt-cinq ans, et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère, qui était de Jérusalem, s’appelait Yoaddan.
      2 Amassia fit ce qui plaît au Seigneur, mais sans grand enthousiasme.
      3 Lorsque Amassia eut solidement établi son autorité royale, il fit mourir les officiers qui avaient assassiné son père, le roi Joas.
      4 Mais il épargna leurs enfants, pour respecter ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la Loi, le livre de Moïse ; en effet, le Seigneur y a donné cet ordre : « On ne doit pas mettre à mort des parents pour des péchés commis par leurs enfants, ni des enfants pour des péchés commis par leurs parents ; un être humain ne peut être mis à mort que pour ses propres péchés. »
      5 Amassia rassembla les hommes de son royaume, Judéens et Benjaminites, et désigna, selon les clans, des commandants de régiments et de compagnies. On dénombra les hommes de vingt ans et plus, et on en trouva trois cent mille, aptes au service et sachant manier la lance et le bouclier.
      6 Pour le prix de trois tonnes d’argent environ, Amassia recruta en plus cent mille vaillants soldats du royaume d’Israël.
      7 Mais un prophète vint lui dire : « Majesté, il ne faut pas que des soldats d’Israël partent avec toi, car le Seigneur ne soutient pas les gens du royaume du Nord.
      8 S’ils t’accompagnent, tu auras beau combattre avec toute ton énergie, Dieu te fera lâcher pied devant tes ennemis. En effet, Dieu seul peut accorder la victoire ou infliger la défaite. »
      9 Amassia demanda au prophète : « Et qu’adviendra-t-il de tout l’argent que j’ai versé à ces soldats ? » – « Le Seigneur a les moyens de t’en redonner bien davantage ! » répondit-il.
      10 Amassia renvoya chez eux les soldats venus du royaume du Nord. Ils s’en retournèrent, mais ils étaient fort en colère à l’égard du royaume de Juda.
      11 Amassia, rempli de courage, partit à la tête de son armée pour la vallée du Sel, où il tua dix mille soldats édomites.
      12 Les Judéens firent prisonniers dix mille autres soldats ; ils les conduisirent au sommet d’une falaise d’où ils les précipitèrent dans le vide, de sorte que tous s’écrasèrent au sol.
      13 Quant aux soldats israélites qu’Amassia avait renvoyés, les empêchant de participer à son expédition, ils envahirent les villes judéennes situées entre Samarie et Beth-Horon, tuèrent trois mille habitants et emportèrent une grande quantité de butin.
      14 Lorsque Amassia revint de sa campagne victorieuse contre les Édomites, il rapporta des statues des dieux d’Édom et il en fit ses dieux ; il les adorait et leur offrait des sacrifices.
      15 Le Seigneur se mit en colère contre lui ; il lui envoya un prophète qui lui dit : « Pourquoi te tournes-tu vers des dieux qui n’ont même pas pu délivrer leur peuple de ta main ? »
      16 Mais le roi lui coupa la parole pour lui demander : « Est-ce que je t’ai désigné comme conseiller royal ? N’insiste pas, si tu ne veux pas qu’on te maltraite. » Le prophète s’interrompit, puis reprit : « Je sais que Dieu a décidé de te faire mourir, parce que tu as agi de la sorte et que tu as refusé d’écouter mon avis. »
      17 Amassia, roi de Juda, préféra d’autres avis et envoya des messagers auprès du roi d’Israël, Joas, fils de Joachaz et petit-fils de Jéhu. Il lui faisait dire : « Viens ! Affrontons-nous dans un combat ! »
      18 Joas adressa cette réponse à Amassia : « Il y avait une fois sur le mont Liban un buisson épineux ; il demanda à un cèdre du Liban de lui donner sa fille comme épouse pour son fils ; mais une bête sauvage du Liban passa sur le buisson et l’écrasa ».
      19 Et Joas ajoutait : « Tu te vantes d’avoir battu les Édomites. Tu fais le fier, mais tu n’es qu’un vaniteux ! Tu ferais mieux de rester chez toi ! Pourquoi veux-tu commencer une guerre qui finira mal pour toi, et où tu seras battu avec toute l’armée de Juda ? »
      20 Mais Amassia ne tint pas compte de l’avertissement ; Dieu voulait en effet causer la perte d’Amassia et de son armée, parce qu’ils s’étaient tournés vers les dieux d’Édom.
      21 Alors Joas, roi d’Israël, se mit en campagne ; son armée et celle d’Amassia s’affrontèrent à Beth-Chémech, au pays de Juda.
      22 L’armée de Juda fut battue par celle d’Israël, et tous les soldats judéens s’enfuirent chez eux.
      23 A Beth-Chémech, Joas, roi d’Israël, fit prisonnier le roi de Juda Amassia, fils de Joas et petit-fils d’Ahazia ; de là il l’emmena à Jérusalem et il démolit la muraille de la ville sur une longueur de près de deux cents mètres, entre la porte d’Éfraïm et la porte de l’Angle.
      24 Il prit l’or, l’argent et tous les objets précieux qui se trouvaient dans le temple, sous la garde d’Obed-Édom, et dans le trésor du palais royal ; il prit également des otages et retourna à Samarie.
      25 Après la mort de Joas, fils de Joachaz et roi d’Israël, Amassia, roi de Juda, vécut encore quinze ans.
      26 Le reste de l’histoire d’Amassia, du début à la fin, est contenu dans le livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël.
      27 Dès l’époque où Amassia s’était détourné du Seigneur, des gens s’étaient mis à comploter contre lui, à Jérusalem. Un jour, il s’enfuit à Lakich, mais on le fit poursuivre et mettre à mort à cet endroit.
      28 Ensuite on ramena son corps dans la capitale du royaume, sur un char tiré par plusieurs chevaux, et on l’enterra dans le tombeau familial.

      Amos 7

      10 Amassia, le prêtre de Béthel, fit parvenir ce message à Jéroboam, roi d’Israël : « Amos cherche à renverser ton pouvoir dans le royaume d’Israël. Le pays ne peut tolérer davantage ses discours.
      11 Voici en effet ce que déclare Amos : “Jéroboam mourra de mort violente, et la population d’Israël sera déportée loin de sa patrie.” »
      12 Amassia dit alors à Amos : « Visionnaire, décampe d’ici et rentre au pays de Juda. Là-bas tu pourras gagner ton pain en faisant le prophète.
      13 Mais cesse de jouer au prophète ici, à Béthel, car c’est un sanctuaire royal, un temple officiel. »
      14 Amos répondit à Amassia : « Je ne suis ni prophète de métier ni membre d’une confrérie prophétique. Je gagne habituellement ma vie en élevant du bétail et en incisant les fruits du sycomore.
      15 Seulement le Seigneur m’a pris derrière mon troupeau, et il m’a dit d’aller parler de sa part à Israël, son peuple.
      16 Or toi, Amassia, tu m’interdis d’apporter le message de Dieu au sujet d’Israël, de débiter mes discours, comme tu dis, contre les descendants d’Isaac. Eh bien, écoute donc ce message du Seigneur :
      17 Voici ce qu’il déclare : “Ta femme sera réduite à se prostituer dans la ville, tes fils et tes filles seront massacrés. Ta propriété sera partagée au cordeau. Toi-même tu mourras en pays païen, et la population d’Israël sera déportée loin de sa patrie.” »
