AROMATES

1. qtôreth (Ex 25:6, Le 4:7, No 4:16,1Sa 2:28,1Ch 6:49, Ps 66:16 141:2, Pr 27:2, Est 1:13, Eze 23:41 etc.). Le sens primitif est : fumée d'une substance qu'on brûle dans un sacrifice ; le sens ordinaire dans l'A.T. est : parfum. Ce terme est souvent rendu par : encens (voir ce mot). Il est employé tantôt seul, tantôt accompagné du mot :

2. sammîm (Ex 25:6 30:34, Le 4:7 16:12, No 4:16,2Ch 2:4 13:11 etc.). Ce terme se rapporte à la préparation des parfums : il est ordinairement précédé du mot qtôreth ; on trad. souvent par la double expression : parfum d'aromates, ou parfum aromatique. Il n'est pas possible d'en rattacher l'origine à une certaine espèce de plante.

3. bâsâm, bésèm, bôsèm (Ex 30:23 35:8 etc.). Ce terme ne semble pas non plus représenter le produit d'un végétal particulier. Il désigne souvent des aromates ou des parfums en général (Ex 25:6, Ca 4:10,14,16, Eze 27:22), ou donne au nom qui le précède la qualification d'embaumé : roseau aromatique bésèm (Ex 30:23 etc.), parterre embaumé (Ca 5:13 6:2). Le bésèm est regardé comme une matière de prix : il figure parmi les parfums brûlés dans le tombeau de David (2Ch 16:14), parmi les offrandes de la reine de Séba à Salomon (1Ro 20:2-10), dans rémunération des richesses de ce roi (verset 25), dans le trésor d'Ézéchias (2Ro 20:13), dans le harem d'Assuérus (Est 2:12).

4. lebonâh, grec libanos (Ex 30:34, Le 2:1 et suivants, No 5:15,1Ch 9:29, Ne 13:5,9 Esa 43:23, Jer 17:26, etc.). Toutes les versions sont d'accord pour y reconnaître l'encens (voir ce mot). L'encens ou oliban est une gomme-résine qui se présente sous la forme de larmes jaunes ou rougeâtres à cassure terne et cireuse et qui brûle avec une flamme blanche en répandant une odeur aromatique. Il est produit par le boswellia Carteri Birdw. et le b. Bhau-Dajiana, fam. des Burséracées, qui se trouvent au pays des Somalis et dans l'Hadramaout en Arabie d'où il était importé en Israël (Esa 60:5, Jer 6:20). Le nom spécifique du b. thurifera signifie porte-encens. Ce sont des arbres ou arbrisseaux résineux, dont les feuilles sont alternes, à folioles disposées le long du pétiole, qui se termine par une foliole impaire ; les fleurs sont petites, régulières, hermaphrodites, en grappes ou en panicules.

5. gad. Il s'agit de la coriandre, aux graines de laquelle est comparée la manne (Ex 16:31, No 11:7). Le coriandrum salivum L., fam. des Ombellifères, indigène de la région méditerr., est une plante glabre, à tige lisse, d'un vert gai, à odeur fétide de punaise, annuelle, grêle, rameuse ; les feuilles sont luisantes, les infér. à segments larges, les super. à segm. aigus presque filiformes ; les ombelles sont composées de 5 à 10 rayons ; involucre nul, folioles des involucelles en petit nombre, filiformes ; pétales de la fleur blancs, les externes rayonnants ; fruits globuleux ou subglobuleux, les deux akènes restant unis à la maturité ; frais, ils dégagent une odeur très désagréable, presque enivrante ; secs, ils ont une odeur agréable et une saveur aromatique ; les graines sont petites, jaunâtres, rugueuses et nettement encerclées de côtes parallèles. On emploie la coriandre comme épice aux propriétés stomachiques et carminatives, dans la confiserie, la fabrication des liqueurs et en médecine.

6. khelbenâh. Le galbanum, qui entrait avec d'autres aromates dans la composition de l'encens sacré (Ex 30:34), est une gomme-résine jaunâtre à odeur forte, exsudation spontanée découlant de la sève lactescente à la base de la tige et des feuilles de la ferula rubricaulis Boiss., plante ombellifère de la Perse mérid. ; il se présente en larmes agglutinées, à parties blanches, jaunes et brunes, onctueuses au toucher, ramollies par la chaleur de la main, d'une odeur pénétrante et d'une saveur amère désagréable.

7. chekhéleth. Cette substance odoriférante (Ex 30:34) n'est pas un produit végétal. C'est l'opercule corné ou calcaire, en forme de griffe ou d'ongle, fixé au pied de certains mollusques gastéropodes, et dont la fonction est de fermer l'ouverture de la coquille quand l'animal s'est retiré à l'intérieur. On s'en sert encore en Egypte et en Nubie dans les préparations compliquées dont les femmes arabes se parfument. C'est Vunguis odoratus de Dioscoride, onyx (Ost.), ongle odorant (Sg.), coquillage odorant (Vers. Syn.). Pourtant certains auteurs identifient le chekhéleth avec le bdellion (voir Baumes, 6).
