Le seul mentionné dans l'A.T. y est symbole de châtiment, annoncé à Babylone : JHVH la balaiera avec le balai de la destruction (Esa 14:23).

Le seul auquel fasse allusion le N.T. y est symbole de la grâce divine cherchant les perdus, qui lui sont précieux (Lu 15:8).

Dans les autres textes où Vers. Syn. emploie le verbe balayer, il a des sens plus précis : brûler (1Ro 14:10), réduire en pièces (De 32:26), vider (Ps 18:43 ; ou fouler, comme le parallèle 2Sa 22:43), racler (Eze 26:4).

Dans l'allégorie par laquelle Jésus illustre la périlleuse tendance à retomber dans un ancien péché (Mt 12:43-45 parallèle Lu 11:24,26), la maison qui n'est que trop prête à l'accueillir est décrite comme « balayée et ornée » (Mt aj. : « vide »).
