La balance des anciens Hébreux, comme celle des Égyptiens, etc., n'était autre que notre balance ordinaire, avec son fléau et ses plateaux retenus par des cordelettes à chacune de ses extrémités. A l'origine les poids étaient en pierre.

La balance est souvent mentionnée dans la Bible, soit au propre, soit au figuré (Job 6:2 31:6, Ps 58:3 62:10, Esa 40:12,15 46:6, Jer 32:10, Eze 5:1 etc.). L'image de Da 5:27 fait penser à la psychostasie égyptienne ou pesée de l'âme dans la balance des dieux, d'après le Livre des Morts.

Dans Ap 6:5, la balance symbolise la disette : la nourriture est pesée à chacun.

Les prophètes, sages et législateurs d'Israël, insistent fréquemment sur la nécessité d'avoir des balances et des poids justes (Le 19:36, cf. De 25:13-16, Pr 11:1 16:11, Eze 45:10, Os 12:8, Am 8:5, Mic 6:11) ; Clément d'Alexandrie attribue cette défense à Jésus : « N'usez pas de fausses balances ! »
