BÉNAJA

(=JHVH a bâti).

Fils d'un prêtre (1Ch 27:5), un des chefs d'armée de David qui commandait le corps des Kéréthiens et des Pélé-thiens ; voir (2Sa 8:18 20:23) ces mots. Il se rendit célèbre par divers exploits (voir Ariel, 3), et le roi l'admit dans son Conseil privé (2Sa 23:20-23,1Ch 11:22-25). Lors de la conspiration d'Adonija, Bénaja respecta les volontés du vieux roi et joua un rôle de premier plan dans le couronnement de Salomon, rival d'Adonija (1Ro 1:5-44). Après son avènement, Salomon, pour obéir à un ordre de David mourant (1Ro 2:5), chargea B. d'exécuter Joab, meurtrier d'Abner et d'Amasa, et lui confia à sa place le commandement de l'armée (1Ro 2:28-35)

Éphraïmite, un des trente vaillants de David (2Sa 23:30,1Ch 11:31) ; d'après 1Ch 27:14, commandait la IIe division de l'armée.

Nom d'une dizaine de personnages obscurs (1Ch 4:36 1Ch 15:18-20,24 16:5,2Ch 20:14 31:13 Esd 10:25,30,35,43 Eze 11:1,13).
