Désignation générale, fréquente dans l'A.T., des animaux domestiques employés à l'agriculture : gros bétail (boeuf, chameau, cheval, âne, mulet) et menu bétail (mouton, chèvre) ; en hébr. bâqâr et tsôn (Le 1:2), souv. trad. « boeufs et brebis » (Ge 13:5, etc.).

Ils constituaient la principale fortune des nomades ; ex. : Abram ou Job (Ge 13:2, Job 1:3) ; aussi le terme miqnè (souv. trad. par « troupeaux ») exprime-t-il le « pouvoir d'achat » qu'ils représentent (Ge 47:16-18). Behémâh, qui peut désigner en général les êtres vivants autres que l'homme (Ge 8:1), a aussi le sens limité de bétail (Ex 20:10), par opposition aux animaux sauvages. Beîr évoque plus spécialement les bêtes de somme (Ge 45:17), mais pas exclusivement (Ex 22:6, Ps 78:48).
