CARAN

Cité du N. -O, de la Mésopotamie, sur le Balih, affluent de l'Euphrate, au Sud-S. -E. d'Ourfa.

Le nom antique (Ge 11:31) s'est maintenu, mais, d'après Pognon, la ville ancienne est à rechercher sur l'emplacement du village moderne d' Eski-Harân, à une heure et demie de marche, au Nord-O. En assyr. harrân (u) =route. Peut-être mentionné dans les tablettes cappadociennes sous la forme ha-ra-na. C'est l'étape obligatoire quand on va vers l'Euphrate ou qu'on en vient. A Caran se trouvait un temple où l'on adorait Sin (dieu lune) et la déesse parèdre, Nin-Gal (bêltu-rabîtu =la grande dame), vénérés également à Ur des Caldéens, d'où sortit Térah (Tharé) et son fils Abraham (Ge 11:31), et dans le sanctuaire ara-méen de Neirab (S. -E. d'Alep).

Caran aurait été le terme de la première étape de la migration d'Abraham, et Térah y serait mort (Ge 11:32). Elle est mentionnée plus tard dans l'histoire d'Isaac (Ge 24:10) et dans celle de Jacob (Ge 27:43). En rivalité avec les rois assyriens, qui la détruisirent, (cf. Esa 37:12,2Ro 19:12) son temple fut reconstruit par Nabonide (546 av. J. -C.) dont la mère était prêtresse de Sin.

Caran redevint un centre commercial grâce à sa situation géographique, à l'orient du gué de Carkémis (Jer 46:2 ; voir Carkémis), aujourd'hui Djerablous, sur la route de Ninive. Le culte païen survécut longtemps à l'introduction du christianisme. A. P.
