CHAÎNE

Instrument de captivité, désigné dans l'A.T. par divers termes hébreu : soit le fer (Ps 107:10), soit l'airain (forme grammaticale de duel, pour une « double chaîne » : 2Ro 25:7, etc.), soit les liens en général (Esa 45:14), soit les menottes (Jer 40:4), soit les entraves (Ps 149:8).

Sont décrits dans les chaînes : Joseph (Ps 105:18), Samson (Jug 16:21), des rois de Juda vaincus (2Ch 33:11 36:6, Jer 39:7 52:11), Jérémie (40:1), des rois païens (Ps 149:8, Na 3:10), les rebelles (Ps 107:10), les justes (Job 36:8). La chaîne est donc le symbole du dur esclavage (La 3:7).

--Dans le N.T., apparaissent dans les chaînes : un démoniaque (Mr 5:3 =Lu 8:29), le Dragon (Ap 20:1), les apôtres Pierre (Ac 12:7) et, Paul (2Ti 1:16). Celui-ci est aussi dans les « liens » (Ac 22:30 26:28, Phm 5:10, Col 4:3) ; comp. ceux des incrédules (Jude 1:6) et des martyrs (Heb 11:36).

La loi romaine faisait attacher le prisonnier au soldat, qui en répondait : Paul y fait allusion (Ac 28:20) ; pour plus de sécurité, on encadrait quelques fois le captif entre deux soldats, chacun attaché par une chaîne à chacune de ses mains : c'est le cas de Pierre (Ac 12:6) et de Paul à certains moments (Ac 21:33). L'apôtre, appelé à « porter le nom du Seigneur devant les nations et les rois » (Ac 9:16), a senti toute la grandeur du contraste : « dans les chaînes », il est « ambassadeur ».
