On ne trouve pas trace, dans les documents bibliques, de l'époque où les ancêtres d'Israël vivaient de la chasse.

Les premiers hommes sont présentés comme des agriculteurs, (Ge 3:17 4:2) ce qui constitue un anachronisme évident. La chasse semble le privilège d'étrangers comme Ismaël (Ge 21:20), ou Esaü (Ge 25:27), sans parler de Nimrod l'Assyrien (Ge 10:9). Toutefois la langue hébraïque a eu meilleure mémoire, s'il est vrai que le mot couramment employé pour désigner la nourriture : tsêdâh, soit parent de tsaïd =gibier.

Les bêtes sauvages ne manquaient certes pas : lion, ours, bouquetin et bien d'autres animaux dont nous avons une liste dans De 14. se rencontrent souvent dans nos récits, mais jamais il n'est question de les chasser systématiquement, comme faisaient les souverains d'Egypte ou d'Assyrie (bas-reliefs assyriens). Le fait de la chasse est pourtant attesté par maint passage comme Le 17:13 (couvrir de poussière le sang du gibier tué), 1Sa 26:20 (allusion à la chasse à la perdrix), Pr 12:27, etc.

--Les instruments utilisés pour la chasse étaient : l'arc et la flèche (Ge 27:3), la fronde (1Sa 17:40), le filet (Job 19:6, Esa 51:20 : le cerf pris au filet, etc.), des pièges (Am 3:5, où se trouve aussi le filet) ; Job 18:8,10 décrit une série d'engins (voir Filet, Armes) ; on creusait aussi des fosses pour prendre les gros animaux (Esa 24:17, Ps 35:7).

Les Apocryphes font allusion à la chasse dans Sir 11:30 et 27:20. L'historien Josèphe parle de chiens de chasse, dont la Bible ne fait aucune mention, et dépeint Hérode le Grand comme un chasseur acharné.

Dans le N.T. se trouvent des métaphores empruntées au langage de la chasse : Lu 11:54 21:34 s, Ro 11:9,1Ti 3:7 6:9,2Ti 2:26. Voir Piège.
