2. tsâphîr, celui qui bondit, bouc, 2Ch 29:21, Esd 6:17 8:35, Da 8:5,8 ;

3. sâhir, poilu, ordinairement bouc, Da 8:21, fém. séhirâh, chèvre, Le 5:6,2Ch 11:16, Esa 13:21 34:14 ;

4. haltoud, pluriel haltoudim, Ge 31:10-12 ; Sg. boucs, Vers. Syn. béliers, désigne en général le bouc d'âge qui conduit le troupeau, et par métaphore les chefs ;

5. taïch, celui qui frappe ou heurte de la tête, bouc, Pr 30:31, etc.

Grec :

1. ériphos, ériphion, Mt 25:32 ;

2. tragos, Heb 9:12,19 10:4).

Le plus apprécié des animaux domestiques. Les patriarches en avaient de grands trou-peaux (Ge 30:33,35 32:14 etc.) ; Nabal en possédait mille (1Sa 25:2). La chèvre n'est pas un animal de plaine, mais de montagne, elle ne tond pas l'herbe tendre des prairies, mais broute les jeunes pousses des arbrisseaux ; elle cause par là des dégâts incalculables : c'est un agent destructeur de premier ordre, qui contribue au déboisement de régions entières. On garde les chèvres avec les brebis (Mt 25:32 et suivant) ; dans ce tableau imagé du jugement dernier, il faut en effet lire chèvres au lieu de boucs : ces derniers n'allaient pas en troupeaux, tandis qu'il est constant de voir en Palestine le mélange des brebis blanches et des chèvres noires, celles-ci fort différentes aussi de celles-là par leur humeur capricieuse. De leurs poils généralement noirs (Ca 4:1 6:5), on tisse des étoffes (1Sa 19:13) ; les couvertures du tabernacle étaient de ce tissu (Ex 26:7 35:26 36:11). De la peau de chèvre on fabrique des outres pour le transport des liquides ; on laisse la peau entière avec ses poils (Jos 9:4, Ps 119:83). Le lait de chèvre sous diverses formes (caillé, fromage, beurre) est un des principaux aliments des bédouins et des fellahs (Pr 27:27). La viande de chevreau est un vrai régal ; un chevreau rôti est le plat obligatoire de toute : fête (Ge 27:9, Jug 6:19 13:15 15:1, Lu 15:29). Comme la brebis on offrait aussi la chèvre en sacrifice. Le jour des Expiations on chassait au désert un bouc chargé des péchés du peuple pour Azazel (voir ce mot) et on en sacrifiait un autre à l'Éternel (Le 16:5 etc.) ; d'où la locution courante de « bouc émissaire ». La chèvre de Syrie (capra mambrica) est noire, parfois grise, rarement blanche. Ses oreilles sont remarquablement longues et retombantes. Par ses caractères physiques elle s'éloigne beaucoup de son ancêtre la chèvre sauvage.
