CONSOLATION

Le terme hébreu qui l'exprime le plus souvent est le verbe nâkham, à divers modes ; très répandu, il signifie : compassion, soulagement, consolation morale ou spirituelle (Ge 24:67 37:35, Ps 77:3, etc.). Il est souvent rendu dans le N.T. par le verbe parakaleïn et ses dérivés, dont le sens varie entre : exhorter, consoler, encourager, supplier (Mt 5:4, Ro 1:12 15:4, Ac 16:9 etc.) ; c'est ainsi que Barnabas est appelé « fils de consolation » ou « d'exhortation » (Ac 4:36) ; voir aussi Paraclet. D'autres termes expriment la svmpa-thie dans le chagrin (Jn 11:29-31,1Th 5:14), l'adoucissement (Col 4:11), etc.

La consolation a en effet des aspects très variés. Non seulement en ce monde incapable de consoler (Job 16:2, Ps 69:21, Za 10:2, Ec 4:1), le croyant dans l'épreuve a besoin d'un Dieu consolateur (Ps 23:4 71:21 86:17), mais encore le peuple d'Israël, quand sa destinée tourne au tragique, attend le Messager divin qui le consolera (Esa 40:1 51:12 61:2 etc.).

Le Messie est attendu comme « le Consolateur », ou « la consolation d'Israël » (Lu 2:25). C'est ce programme que Jésus prend à son compte (Lu 4:16 et suivants), les conditions qu'il pose étant toutes spirituelles (Mt 5:3 et suivants). Comme Dieu console (2Co 7:6), Christ aussi console (2Th 2:16 et suivant), le Saint-Esprit est le Consolateur (Jn 14:26) ; la consolation est apportée par les Écritures (Ps 119:50), par les apôtres (1Th 2 : et suivant), par les fidèles (1Th 4:18) ; mais sa source est toujours dans l'amour de Dieu le Père, décrit en des comparaisons délicates et tendres : (Esa 66:13) il conserve, protège, bénit et fait revivre. La consolation biblique n'est pas faite de patience seulement ou de résignation, elle est positive, active, due à une intervention de la puissance divine qui s'accomplit dans la faiblesse humaine. Le passage classique sur la consolation chrétienne est l'émouvante entrée en matière de la deuxième ép. aux Cor (2Co 1:3-7).
