1. Appelée aussi Kirjath-Sépher (=ville du livre), identifiée actuellement avec Beit Mirsim (de préférence à Ed-Dhoherîyé), à 20 km. au Sud-O. d'Hébron. Habitée par les Ana-kim (Jos 11:21), prise par Josué (Jos 10:38 12:13) ou, d'après une autre version, par Othniel (Jos 15:17, Jug 1:11-15) ; ville lévitique (Jos 21:15,1Ch 6:58). Le nom de Kirjath-Sanna (Jos 15:48) est une variante qui ne se retrouve pas ailleurs. Que signifie le nom de Kirjath-Sépher ? Y avait-il là une bibliothèque ? L'alphabet n'y aurait-il pas été inventé ? Un papyrus du temps de Ramsès II (XIII e siècle av. J. -C.) mentionne en Palestine une « maison de l'écriture » (Bt-tpr). Mais Kirjath-Sépher a pu être primitivement aussi lu K. -Sopher, ce qui signifierait « ville du scribe ». Les fouilles commencées sur ce site en 1926 (Dr Kyle) ont retrouvé une ville, 3 Hectares 1/2 de superficie) un superbe rempart de crête dressé sur un glacis d'argile et de pierres (illustration de No 13:28), qui fut élevé, croit-on, aux environs du XVIII e siècle av. J. -C, et les habitations d'une population qui semblait adonnée à l'industrie de la teinturerie, ce qui ne l'empêchait pas de s'occuper d'agriculture (nombreux silos). La ville subit les contre-coups des incursions des Égyptiens et des Assyriens. Élie dut disparaître à l'exil. Jusqu'ici les documents épigraphiques trouvés dans la ville dite « de l'écriture » sont rares. En 1928, une stèle a été découverte, qui représente un serpent enroulé autour d'un personnage vêtu, et est datée des alentours de l'an 1500 av. J. -C. : attestation intéressante du culte du serpent en Palestine, à l'époque cananéenne.

2. Autre localité, citée à la limite N. de Juda (Jos 15:7), mais le texte est susceptible d'autres traductions.

3. Ville du territoire de Gath (Jos 13:26), appelée ailleurs Lodébar (2Sa 17:27).
