DIONYSOS

Nom grec de Bacchus, appelé aussi en latin Liber, dieu originaire de Thrace, fils de Zeus et de Sémélé, déesse lunaire. Dieu de la force génératrice et de la végétation, ses plus anciennes fêtes, les dionysies primitives, étaient célébrées au moment du solstice d'hiver, c-à-d. à l'époque où le jour reprend le pas sur la nuit et où le soleil va recommencer d'échauffer la terre, de l'éveiller et de provoquer le retour de la vie dans la nature. Ce même moment symbolique de la puissance radieuse et vivifiante l'emportant sur la puissance des ténèbres et de la mort a été choisi, plus tard, pour célébrer la fête de Mithra, et les chrétiens y ont rattaché à leur tour la solennité de Noël. Mais, après les temps homériques, Dionysos-Bacchus devint plus spécialement le dieu du vin, la divinité puissante, joyeuse mais terrible, de l'exaltation par l'ivresse ; son culte orgiaque devint aisément populaire et se répandit dans toute la Grèce au temps de la démocratie. Dès lors, ses fêtes correspondent en Attique aux principales phases de l'histoire de la vigne et de son produit. C'étaient les Anthestêries, en février, fêtes de la reprise de la végétation ; les dionysies urbaines ou grandes dionysies qui fêtaient en mars l'exubérance de la sève et toutes les promesses faites au printemps par le dieu libérateur (Athènes, aux jours de sa gloire, donnait à cette fête un extraordinaire éclat, de partout on accourait à la capitale et son théâtre vit, en ces occasions, applaudir des chefs-d'oeuvre) ; les Oscho-phories, fêtes du raisin à sa maturité--telle en Israël la fête des Souccoth qui célèbre les vendanges (De 16:13-15) ; les petites dionysies, à l'entrée de l'hiver, assemblées campagnardes où l'on se réjouissait du vin nouveau et qui comportaient des choeurs tantôt joyeux, tantôt graves ; enfin les Lénées, dont les processions célébraient en janvier les fêtes du pressoir. Les Bacchantes d'Euripide (voir aussi les Acharniens d'Aristophane) nous décrivent le caractère de la possession bachique dont le mystère orphique est tout imprégné.

Le culte de Bacchus est lié dans les Mystères (voir ce mot) à celui de Démèter, la terre nourricière. Conservé d'abord à Eleusis dans sa pureté primitive comme glorification de la fertilité, de la fécondité et de la résurrection, il dégénéra à Athènes, et bientôt dans tout l'Orient méditerranéen, en fêtes où la frénésie mystique s'unissait à la débauche et l'extase au vertige des sens. Les bacchanales, à cause de leur élément orgiastique, firent certainement beaucoup de- mal à la Grèce, mais il est juste de reconnaître que, de ces fêtes dionysiaques, où l'imagination s'exaltait au contact des mystères de la nature vivante et débordait en délire sacré, sortit un élargissement de la conception artistique et du sens littéraire ; le drame, cultivé avec tant de bonheur par le génie hellénique, y prit naissance. L'histoire de l'oracle de Delphes nous montre aussi que la mantique, la divination par l'extase, apprit beaucoup des expériences bachiques. Dionysos agit sur Apollon qui ceint la couronne de lierre. Tout ceci nous rappelle que l'intention première des transports dionysiaques était de satisfaire à l'aspiration universelle de l'humanité qui, en face de la mort, cherche un moyen pour revivre, pour échapper au poids douloureux de son impuissance, au remords de sa faute, pour s'étourdir et en même temps s'abreuver à une source de vie. Toutes les légendes relatives à Bacchus révèlent, à côté de l'élément d'ivresse joyeuse et de débordement sensuel, cette obsession de souffrir, de mourir, de renaître après l'expiation héroïque et de s'unir à son dieu. « Le mysticisme chrétien pourrait reconnaître (dans la façon dont Euripide représente l'union mystique de ces initiés avec Dionysos) plus d'un trait qu'il s'est approprié, moins par imitation que par un mouvement naturel qui pousse certaines âmes à se confondre dans une union passionnée avec l'objet inconnu de leur adoration » (J. Girard).

Mais le bachisme était une fausse piste sur le chemin de la vie. Après avoir égaré la Grèce, il débaucha Rome. Le sénatus-consulte de 186 av. J. -C, où le Sénat interdit les mystères dionysiaques, intervint trop tard pour empêcher la déchéance.

Ce culte sensuel et sanguinaire avait été fort en honneur chez les Séleucides. Antiochus IV Épiphane (175-164) obligea les Juifs à participer aux processions dionysiaques (fêtes des bacchanales) et à « se promener dans les rues couronnés de lierre en l'honneur de Bacchus » (2Ma 6:7) ; le lierre était la plante sacrée du dieu. Il ne semble pas qu'on ait considéré alors que la chose fît, en Israël, grand scandale en dehors du milieu des puritains de l'époque. De fait, l'exaltation par l'ivresse, l'inspiration par l'ébriété n'étaient pas inconnues des Hébreux ; les réactions des Récabites et des naziréens (No 6:3, Jer 35 etc.), ainsi que les imprécations des prophètes, prouvent assez qu'il était nécessaire de combattre les excès de cet ordre. Ésaïe crie malheur contre ceux qui montrent leur bravoure à absorber vin et liqueurs fortes (Esa 5:22) ; il stigmatise les « ivrognes d'Ephraïm » (Esa 28:1 et suivants), ainsi que les habitants de Juda, égarés par la boisson, avec leurs prêtres et prophètes qui titubent en prophétisant et en rendant la justice (Esa 28:7). Le deuxième Ésaïe met en scène les gardiens du peuple, faux bergers et prophètes courtisans, qu'il traite de chiens muets au point de vue de l'inspiration divine, mais qu'il montre recherchant le vin et les liqueurs fortes (Esa 56:6-12). Ces passages sont à rapprocher de celui où Michée apostrophe son peuple qui lui interdit, à lui, de prophétiser, mais qui se trouve fort bien des diseurs d'oracles qui cherchent ailleurs qu'en Jéhovah leur inspiration (Mic 2,3). Tandis que les faux prophètes parlent sous l'empire des boissons spiritueuses (Mic 2:11, dont la trad. habituelle est : prophétiser sur le vin, ce qui donne un sens assez inexplicable, peut être traduit : prophétiser sous l'empire du vin ; on trouve en effet le préfixe hébreu le dans le sens de : à cause de (Ge 4:23, Esa 14:9 60:9), sous l'empire de =lezôth : (Job 37:1) sous l'empire des faits qui font éclater la puissance de Dieu, « mon coeur est tout tremblant » ; VS. traduit « mon coeur frémit à ce spectacle »), lui, Michée, parle sous l'empire de l'Esprit de Jéhovah dont il est rempli, qui fait sa force, sa clairvoyance et son courage pour dénoncer à Israël son péché (Mic 3:8). On retrouve le rapprochement entre les deux ivresses dans la méprise d'Héli en présence de la prière extatique d'Anne (1Sa 1:13), dans le cri de Jérémie : « Je suis comme un homme ivre » (Jer 23:9), dans l'allusion d'Ésaïe comparant l'esprit d'étourdissement à une ivresse qui ne vient pas du vin (Esa 29:9). L'opposition entre les deux sources de l'inspiration, celle d'en bas et celle d'en haut, la fausse et la vraie, l'infernale et la divine, se retrouve dans le N.T. quand saint Paul dit à ses paroissiens d'Éphèse et de Corinthe : « Ne vous enivrez pas de vin, mais soyez remplis d'Esprit saint... Un même Esprit a étanché notre soif » (Eph 5:18,1Co 12:13). C'est cette même opposition soulignant la même association d'idées qui fait dire aux sceptiques de la foule, le jour de la Pentecôte : « Ils sont pleins de vin doux ! », à quoi saint Pierre répond : « Ces hommes ne sont pas ivres, comme vous le supposez, mais dans ce que vous voyez s'accomplit la parole du prophète Joël... Je répandrai mon Esprit sur mes serviteurs, et ils prophétiseront » (Ac 2:12-18).

L'alternative ainsi posée justifie l'instinct des races latines où nous trouvons le même mot spiritus pour indiquer les puissances mystérieuses, subtiles--spiritueuses ou spirituelles--qui ont le secret de s'emparer du système cérébral, qui le dominent et l'exaltent et lui donnent l'illusion d'être affranchi ou l'affranchissent réellement des limites de la vie ordinaire (voir Extase ; cf. A. Westphal, Les Prophètes, 1924, t. I, pp. 48-93).

On est un peu surpris de voir la littérature deutéronomique compter le vin et les liqueurs fortes parmi les éléments que « demande l'âme » pour se réjouir devant Jéhovah lors des fêtes religieuses d'Israël (De 14:26, cf. De 16:13-16) et l'austère réformateur Néhémie, Esdras et son clergé, recommander les liqueurs douces au peuple qui devait manifester sa joie de la rénovation de l'alliance jéhovique et préparer pour le lendemain la fête des Tabernacles. Il faut en conclure, en tout cas, que le cycle dionysiaque n'avait exercé aucune influence dans le monde auquel appartenaient les Juifs avant la conquête d'Alexandre le Gd. Quoi qu'il en soit, les Grecs et les Romains croyaient que la fête des Tabernacles, célébrée sous des tentes de feuillage, avait été instituée en l'honneur de Bacchus. Tacite, mieux informé que Plutarque, distingue avec soin les solennités juives des cérémonies dionysiaques. Ce qui n'empêche point que sous Antonin le Pieux (138-161 ap. J. -C.) les monnaies d 'Aelia Capitolina, c-à-d. Jérusalem, portent d'un côté l'effigie du monarque et de l'autre Bacchus avec une grappe de raisin à la main et la panthère symbolique à ses pieds. D'aucuns y trouvent la preuve que le monde païen voyait toujours en Jérusalem une des capitales du culte de Dionysos. Ceci cadrerait mal avec l'estime où l'on tenait, à Rome et ailleurs, la religion des Juifs. Nous pensons qu'il faut plutôt voir ici une bravade comme celle de Ptolémée IV Philopator (222-204 av. J. -C.) voulant faire marquer les Juifs d'Egypte, au fer rouge, d'une feuille de lierre, emblème de Bacchus (3Ma 2:29), ou comme celle de Nicanor (61-160 av. J. -C.) menaçant les Juifs, s'ils ne livraient pas Judas Macchabée, de détruire l'autel et de consacrer à Jérusalem, sur l'emplacement du lieu saint, « un temple magnifique à Bacchus » (2Ma 14:33).       9 Please listen to this, you heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice, and pervert all equity.
      10 They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity.
      11 Her leaders judge for bribes, and her priests teach for a price, and her prophets of it tell fortunes for money: yet they lean on Yahweh, and say, "Isn't Yahweh in the midst of us? No disaster will come on us."
      12 Therefore Zion for your sake will be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem will become heaps of rubble, and the mountain of the temple like the high places of a forest.

      12 They were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, "What does this mean?"
