DOMINATION

Pouvoir d'un maître, d'un seigneur. L'autorité (voir ce mot) est un ascendant moral et libre ; la puissance est une force effective ; la domination est le pouvoir, accepté ou imposé, d'un maître sur ses subordonnés.

C'est Dieu qui, de droit, est le souverain Maître de tout (1Ch 29:12) ; sa domination s'étend sur toutes choses (Ps 103:19) ; elle est éternelle (Ps 145:13, Da 6:26). Il en a délégué une partie à l'humanité (Ge 1:28, cf. Sir 17:4, Sag 9:2).

Mais Dieu n'a pas voulu imposer sa domination, et certaines de ses créatures ont mis à profit la liberté qui leur était laissée pour s'ériger en tyrans : le diable (Lu 4:6-8) et les « dominations mauvaises » (Eph 6:12) ; l'homme au lieu de dominer le péché s'y est laissé asservir (Ge 4:7, Ro 6:14), et toutes les autorités normales menacent de se trouver faussées par l'usurpation ou la tyrannie : dans la famille (Ge 3:16,1Ti 2:12) ; dans les États (Le 26:17, Jug 9:22, Da 7:6,12, Mt 20:25) ; jusque dans l'Église (1Pi 5:3).

Dieu a annoncé par les prophètes et envoyé un Messie, (Esa 9:5, Za 9:10) un Fils d'homme appelé à rétablir l'ordre (Da 7:13,26 à exercer le pouvoir sur les morts et sur les vivants (Ro 14:9), « sur toute principauté, autorité, puissance, domination », c'est-à-dire sur toutes les sortes de pouvoirs, soit terrestres, soit célestes, tant bons que mauvais (Eph 1:21). C'est sans doute dans ce sens universel qu'il faut espérer la suprématie du Christ, plutôt que de la limiter aux anges et aux démons, ou de personnifier ces termes dans quatre classes hiérarchiques d'anges, car saint Paul a varié, d'un passage à l'autre, et sa nomenclature et l'application qu'il en faisait. (cf. Eph 6:12, Col 1:16)
