1. L'hébreu âgâm désigne une pièce d'eau stagnante : dans le Delta d'Egypte, toute flaque plus ou moins étendue produite par le retrait de l'inondation du Nil est appelée étang, par opposition soit aux neuves, canaux ou rivières, soit aux réservoirs (miqvë) où l'on conduit l'eau (Ex 7:19 8:6).

Dans la Palestine aride, l'étang est un bienfait, image des bénédictions de Dieu (Esa 35:7 42:15, Ps 107:35).

A Babylone, pays abondamment irrigué par les bras de l'Euphrate, l'étang serait un marécage, néfaste à la plaine fertile (Esa 14:23).

2. L'hébreu berékâ désigne le bassin creusé de main d'homme (arabe, birket), quelques fois appelé piscine (Ca 7:5) ou, mieux, réservoir (Ec 2:6), cité comme image d'une ville toute remplie qui se vide (Na 2:8). Sont nommés comme étangs ceux de Gabaon (2Sa 2:13, cf. Jer 41:12), Hébron (2Sa 4:12), Samarie (1Ro 22:38), et, à Jérusalem (voir ce mot), l'Étang supérieur (2Ro 18:17 20:20, Esa 7:3) et l'Étang inférieur (Esa 22:9), le vieux réservoir (Esa 22:11), l'Étang artificiel (Ne 3:16) et l'Étang du Roi (Ne 2:14), ce dernier étant probablement le même que celui de Siloé (Ne 2:15). Celui-ci est cité dans Jn 9:7 et suivants, comme celui de Béthesda dans Jn 5:2, sous le nom grec colurnbêthra

3. Quant aux « Vasques de Salomon », situées au Sud-O, de Bethléhem, ce sont trois immenses bassins construits contre un fond de vallée et reliés à Jérusalem par des aqueducs extrêmement longs à cause de leurs sinuosités ; c'est le texte Ec 2:6 qui les a fait attribuer à Salomon, mais on y voit aujourd'hui une entreprise de Pilate et des empereurs du II e siècle, qui d'ailleurs durent les faire édifier sur des restes de travaux antérieurs : travaux d'une importance telle, qu'il faut bien les assigner à une période paisible de la royauté israélite. Tant d'entreprises de cette nature aux environs de la capitale attestent les précautions extraordinaires prises par ses maîtres de tous les âges pour lui amener de loin d'énormes provisions des eaux de pluie et de surface.

4. Dans l'Apoc, « l'étang (grec limnê =lac) de feu et de soufre » symbolise le châtiment définitif, la seconde mort (Apo 19:20 10:10,14 et suivant Apo 21:8) ; l'origine de cet emblème remonte probablement à la destruction des villes de la mer Morte (qui est un grand « étang »), par « le soufre et le feu » (Ge 19:24 et suivant).
