GAÏUS

Nom latin, ou plus exactement prénom (écrit aussi Caïus), très répandu dans le monde gréco-romain ; se trouve cinq fois dans le N.T.

Un Macédonien, compagnon de voyage de saint Paul (Ac 19:29), fut arrêté dans l'émeute d'Éphèse avec Aristarque. Ces deux noms propres, et d'autres aussi (Sosipater, Secundus, etc.) se lisent dans diverses inscriptions de Thessalonique ou de Macédoine énumérant les magistrats en fonction dans la cité ou la province. « Gaïus de Derbe », compagnon de l'apôtre au retour de son troisième voyage (Ac 20:4), peut avoir été le même Macédonien, dont le domicile ordinaire aurait donc été à Derbe. Le Corinthien baptisé par saint Paul (1Co 1:14) est probablement le même que son « hôte » (Ro 16:23), si ce chapitre est bien écrit à Corinthe. La troisième ép. de Jean est adressée à un autre Gaïus (3Jn 1).
