1. Contrée qui, au sens le plus large, est limitée au Nord par le Yarmouk, au Sud par l'Arnon, à l'Est par le désert, à l'Ouest par le Jourdain et la mer Morte. Pays montagneux, couvert de pâturages, assez boisé sur le versant occidental, où les eaux abondantes forment des torrents qui coulent encaissés. Pour la première fois mentionné à propos des démêlés entre Jacob et Laban (Ge 31:21).

La région se faisait une renommée pour sa myrrhe et son baume, que l'on exportait jusqu'en Egypte (Ge 37:25, Jer 8:22 46:11) et pour ses pâturages abondants (Ca 4:3 6:5, No 32:1). On comprend donc facilement pourquoi le roi Sihon n'accorda pas à Israël le passage sur ce territoire (No 21:23) que revendiquèrent Gad et Ruben, riches en troupeaux (No 32:1,5). Moïse le leur accorda, mais donna le N. du pays à la moitié de la tribu de Manassé (No 32:33) qui lutta contre Galaad (No 32:39).

La systématisation des statistiques sacerdotales fit de Galaad un fils du Manassite Makir (No 26:29,1Ch 2:21) et un grand-père de Tsélophcad (No 27:1). Il y eut de même une confusion autour de la personne de Jaïr, fils de Manassé, artisan de la conquête (No 32:41), et Jaïr, juge en Israël ; voir (Jug 10:3 et suivant) Bourgs de Jaïr. Ce qui est sûr, c'est que la lutte fut parfois très vive contre les populations voisines (Ammonites, Moabites), qui disputaient la région de Galaad aux premiers chefs d'Israël : Jephté (Jug 11), Saül (1Sa 11). Lors de la lutte engagée sous l'inspiration de Débora, les Israélites en Galaad étaient restés neutres (Jug 5:17), mais leur pays servit plus tard de retraite à ceux de leurs compatriotes fuyant les Philistins (1Sa 13:7), ou d'asile aux dissidents. (Isboseth, 2Sa 2:8) David s'y réfugia à son tour, au moment de la révolte d'Absalom (2Sa 17:27) et Barzillaï assura son entretien et sa protection (2Sa 19:31,1 Ro 2:7). Le pays resta d'ailleurs sous la juridiction des premiers rois d'Israël (2Sa 24:6,1 Ro 4:13).

Le prophète Élie habitait en Galaad (1Ro 17:1), et Amos menaçait de la vengeance de l'Éternel Damasquins et Ammonites, coupables de crimes contre les Galaadites (Am 1:3,13), qui n'en étaient pas pour autant irréprochables (Os 6:8 12:11). On recrutait- chez eux les hommes des coups de force (2Ro 15:25). Le pays en lutte contre Damas (Am 1:3,2Ro 10:33) n'échappa pas à l'Assyrie (2Ro 15:29) ; ses habitants furent emmenés captifs. Les rescapés rentrèrent après l'exil, avec Néhémie (Esd 2:61, Ne 7:63), mais étaient une minorité au milieu d'une population païenne. Alexandre Jannée fit souvent la guerre en cette région, que l'influence romaine marqua dès l'époque d'Hérode le Grand.

Il n'est donc pas sûr qu'une montagne de Galaad ait existé à l'Ouest du Jourdain, différente de la région montagneuse à l'Est du fleuve. A. P.

  16 but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea , and came to Kadesh;
  
  17 then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Please let me pass through your land;' but the king of Edom didn't listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel stayed in Kadesh.
  
  18 Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn't come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.

  21 Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.
  
  22 They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.
  
  23 So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?
  
  24 Won't you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
  
  25 Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?
  
  26 While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn't you recover them within that time?
  
  27 I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon."
  
  28 However the king of the children of Ammon didn't listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
  
  29 Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.
  
  30 Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, "If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,
  
  31 then it shall be, that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering."
  
  32 So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.
  
  33 He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
  
  34 Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.
  
  35 It happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can't go back."
  
  36 She said to him, "My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon."
  
  37 She said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions."
  
  38 He said, "Go." He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.
  
  39 It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she was a virgin. It was a custom in Israel,
  
  40 that the daughters of Israel went yearly to celebrate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

  7 He took a yoke of oxen, and cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, "Whoever doesn't come forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen." The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.
  
  8 He numbered them in Bezek; and the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.
  
  9 They said to the messengers who came, "Thus you shall tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have deliverance.'" The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
  
  10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, "Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you."
  
  11 It was so on the next day, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and struck the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it happened, that those who remained were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.
  
  12 The people said to Samuel, "Who is he who said, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' Bring those men, that we may put them to death!"
  
  13 Saul said, "There shall not a man be put to death this day; for today Yahweh has worked deliverance in Israel."
  
  14 Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there."
  
  15 All the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Yahweh in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace offerings before Yahweh; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

  17 Les Ammonites se rassemblèrent et installèrent leur camp en Galaad. De leur côté, les Israélites se rassemblèrent et installèrent leur camp à Mitspa.
  
  18 Le peuple et les chefs de Galaad se dirent l'un à l'autre : « Quel est l'homme qui commencera l'attaque contre les Ammonites ? Il sera le chef de tous les habitants de Galaad. »

  1 Jephthé le Galaadite était un vaillant guerrier. Il était le fils d'une prostituée et son père était un certain Galaad.
  
  2 La femme de Galaad lui donna des fils qui, devenus grands, chassèrent Jephthé et lui dirent : « Tu n’auras pas d’héritage dans la famille de notre père, car tu es le fils d'une autre femme. »
  
  3 Jephthé s'enfuit loin de ses frères et habita dans le pays de Tob. Des vauriens se rassemblèrent à ses côtés, et ils faisaient avec lui les expéditions guerrières.
  
  4 Quelque temps après, les Ammonites firent la guerre à Israël.
  
  5 Face à cette situation, les anciens de Galaad allèrent chercher Jephthé au pays de Tob.
  
  6 Ils lui dirent : « Viens, tu seras notre chef et nous combattrons les Ammonites. »
  
  7 Jephthé répondit aux anciens de Galaad : « N'avez-vous pas eu de la haine pour moi et ne m'avez-vous pas chassé de chez mon père ? Pourquoi venez-vous vers moi, maintenant que vous êtes dans la détresse ? »
  
  8 Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé : « Nous revenons vers toi maintenant afin que tu marches avec nous, que tu combattes les Ammonites et que tu sois notre chef, celui de tous les habitants de Galaad. »
  
  9 Jephthé répondit aux anciens de Galaad : « Si vous me faites revenir pour combattre les Ammonites et que l'Eternel me les livre, je serai votre chef. »
  
  10 Les anciens de Galaad dirent à Jephthé : « Que l'Eternel soit témoin entre nous, si nous ne faisons pas ce que tu dis. »
  
  11 Jephthé partit alors avec les anciens de Galaad. Le peuple le mit à sa tête et l'établit comme chef, et Jephthé répéta devant l'Eternel, à Mitspa, toutes les paroles qu'il avait prononcées.
  
  12 Jephthé envoya des messagers au roi des Ammonites pour lui dire : « Que me veux-tu, pour que tu viennes m’attaquer et faire la guerre à mon pays ? »
  
  13 Le roi des Ammonites répondit aux messagers de Jephthé : « C'est qu'Israël, quand il est parti d'Egypte, s'est emparé de mon pays, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok et au Jourdain. Rends-le maintenant de bon gré. »
  
  14 Jephthé envoya de nouveau des messagers au roi des Ammonites
  
  15 pour lui dire : « Voici ce que dit Jephthé : Israël ne s'est pas emparé du pays de Moab, ni du pays des Ammonites.
  
  16 En effet, lorsque Israël est parti d'Egypte, il a marché dans le désert jusqu'à la mer des Roseaux et il est arrivé à Kadès.
  
  17 Il a alors envoyé des messagers au roi d'Edom pour lui dire : ‘Laisse-moi passer par ton pays.’Mais le roi d'Edom n’a pas voulu. Il en a aussi envoyé au roi de Moab, qui a refusé. Et Israël est resté à Kadès.
  
  18 Puis il a repris sa marche dans le désert, a contourné le pays d'Edom et le pays de Moab, et il est arrivé à l'est du pays de Moab. Ils ont campé de l'autre côté de l'Arnon, sans entrer sur le territoire de Moab, car l'Arnon marque la frontière de Moab.
  
  19 Israël a envoyé des messagers à Sihon, le roi des Amoréens, roi de Hesbon, et lui a dit : ‘Laisse-nous passer par ton pays jusqu'à l'endroit où nous allons.’
  
  20 Mais Sihon n’a pas eu assez confiance en Israël pour le laisser passer sur son territoire. Il a rassemblé tout son peuple, a établi son camp à Jahats et a combattu Israël.
  
  21 L'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, a livré Sihon et tout son peuple entre les mains d'Israël, qui les a battus. Israël a alors pris possession de tout le pays des Amoréens installés dans cette région.
  
  22 Ils ont pris possession de tout le territoire des Amoréens, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jabbok et depuis le désert jusqu'au Jourdain.
  
  23 » Maintenant que l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, a chassé les Amoréens devant son peuple, Israël, est-ce toi qui devrais avoir la possession de leur pays ?
  
  24 Ce que ton Dieu Kemosh te donne à posséder, ne le possèdes-tu pas ? Et tout ce que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, a mis en notre possession devant nous, nous ne pourrions pas le posséder !
  
  25 Vaux-tu donc mieux que Balak, fils de Tsippor, le roi de Moab ? A-t-il cherché querelle à Israël ou lui a-t-il fait la guerre ?
  
  26 Voilà 300 ans qu'Israël habite à Hesbon et dans les villes qui en dépendent, à Aroër et dans les villes qui en dépendent, et dans toutes les villes situées sur les rives de l'Arnon. Pourquoi ne les lui avez-vous pas enlevées à ce moment-là ?
  
  27 Je ne t'ai pas offensé et tu agis mal avec moi en me faisant la guerre. Que l'Eternel, le juge, soit aujourd'hui juge entre les Israélites et les Ammonites ! »
  
  28 Le roi des Ammonites n'écouta pas les paroles que Jephthé lui fit dire.
  
  29 L'Esprit de l'Eternel reposa sur Jephthé. Il traversa Galaad et Manassé, puis il passa à Mitspé de Galaad. De là, il marcha contre les Ammonites.
  
  30 Jephthé fit un vœu à l'Eternel. Il dit : « Si tu livres les Ammonites entre mes mains,
  
  31 toute personne qui, à mon heureux retour de chez les Ammonites, sortira de chez moi pour venir à ma rencontre appartiendra à l'Eternel, et je l'offrirai en holocauste. »
  
  32 Jephthé marcha contre les Ammonites et l'Eternel les livra entre ses mains.
  
  33 Il leur infligea une très grande défaite, depuis Aroër jusque vers Minnith, espace qui comptait 20 villes, et jusqu'à Abel-Keramim. Les Ammonites furent humiliés devant les Israélites.
  
  34 Jephthé retourna chez lui à Mitspa. Et voici que sa fille sortit à sa rencontre avec des tambourins et des danses. C'était son seul enfant : il n'avait pas de fils et pas d'autre fille.
  
  35 Dès qu'il la vit, il déchira ses vêtements et dit : « Ah ! ma fille ! Tu me jettes dans l'abattement, tu fais partie de ceux qui me troublent ! J'ai fait un vœu à l'Eternel et je ne peux revenir en arrière. »
  
  36 Elle lui dit : « Mon père, si tu as fait un vœu à l'Eternel, traite-moi conformément à tes paroles, maintenant que l'Eternel t'a vengé de tes ennemis, des Ammonites. »
  
  37 Elle dit encore à son père : « Accorde-moi seulement ceci : laisse-moi partir pendant deux mois ! Je m'en irai, je me rendrai dans les montagnes et j’y pleurerai ma virginité avec mes compagnes. »
  
  38 Jephthé répondit : « Vas-y ! » et il la laissa partir pour deux mois. Elle s'en alla avec ses compagnes et pleura sa virginité sur les montagnes.
  
  39 Au bout des deux mois, elle revint vers son père et il accomplit sur elle le vœu qu'il avait fait. Elle n'avait pas eu de relations avec un homme. Il y eut depuis lors une prescription en Israël :
  
  40 tous les ans, 4 jours par an, les filles d'Israël s'en vont célébrer la fille de Jephthé le Galaadite.

  4 Jephthé rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad et livra bataille à Ephraïm. Les Galaadites battirent Ephraïm parce que les Ephraïmites disaient : « Vous n’êtes que des fuyards d'Ephraïm ! Galaad fait partie d'Ephraïm et est passé à Manassé ! »
  
  5 Galaad s'empara des gués du Jourdain du côté d'Ephraïm. Quand l'un des fuyards d'Ephraïm disait : « Laissez-moi passer ! » les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient : « Es-tu éphraïmite ? » Il répondait : « Non. »
  
  7 Jephthé fut juge en Israël pendant 6 ans. Puis Jephthé le Galaadite mourut, et il fut enterré dans l'une des villes de Galaad.

  1 Tous les Israélites se mirent en marche, depuis Dan jusqu'à Beer-Shéba et jusqu’au pays de Galaad, et l'assemblée se réunit comme un seul homme devant l'Eternel, à Mitspa.
  
  1 Samuel 11
  
  1 Nachash l'Ammonite vint assiéger Jabès en Galaad. Tous les habitants de Jabès dirent à Nachash : « Conclus une alliance avec nous et nous te servirons. »
  
  2 Mais Nachash l'Ammonite leur répondit : « Je traiterai avec vous à condition de vous crever à tous l'œil droit et de jeter ainsi la honte sur tout Israël. »
  
  3 Les anciens de Jabès lui dirent : « Accorde-nous une trêve de sept jours afin que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël. Si personne ne vient nous secourir, nous nous livrerons à toi. »
  
  4 Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibea, la ville de Saül, et firent au peuple le récit de ces événements. Tout le peuple se mit alors à pleurer tout haut.
  
  5 A ce moment, Saül revint des champs, derrière ses bœufs. Il demanda : « Qu'a donc le peuple, à pleurer ainsi ? » On lui raconta ce qu'avaient dit les habitants de Jabès.
  
  6 L'Esprit de Dieu vint sur Saül lorsqu'il entendit cela, et sa colère s'enflamma fortement.
  
  7 Il prit une paire de bœufs, les coupa en morceaux et les envoya par l’intermédiaire de messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël en disant : « Si quelqu’un ne marche pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel, ses bœufs seront traités de la même manière. » La terreur de l'Eternel s'empara du peuple et il se mit en marche comme un seul homme.
  
  8 Saül le passa en revue à Bézek : les Israélites étaient 300'000, et les hommes de Juda 30'000.
  
  9 Ils annoncèrent aux messagers qui étaient venus : « Voici ce que vous direz aux habitants de Jabès en Galaad : ‘Demain vous aurez du secours, quand le soleil sera à son zénith.’ » Les messagers portèrent cette nouvelle aux habitants de Jabès, qui furent remplis de joie.
  
  10 Ils dirent aux Ammonites : « Demain nous nous livrerons à vous et vous nous traiterez comme vous voudrez. »
  
  11 Le lendemain, Saül divisa le peuple en 3 groupes. Ils pénétrèrent dans le camp des Ammonites tôt le matin, et ils leur portèrent des coups jusqu'à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui purent leur échapper furent dispersés au point qu’il n'en resta pas deux ensemble.
  
  12 Le peuple dit à Samuel : « Quels sont les hommes qui refusaient de voir Saül régner sur eux ? Livrez-les-nous et nous les ferons mourir. »
  
  13 Mais Saül dit : « Personne ne sera mis à mort aujourd’hui, car aujourd'hui l'Eternel a accompli une délivrance en Israël. »
  
  14 Samuel dit au peuple : « Venez, allons à Guilgal pour y confirmer la royauté. »
  
  15 Tout le peuple se rendit à Guilgal et ils y sacrèrent Saül roi devant l'Eternel. Ils y offrirent des sacrifices de communion devant l'Eternel, et Saül et tous les hommes d'Israël s’y livrèrent à de grandes réjouissances.
