N'a pas encore été identifié avec certitude : on songe à Kaphar Dikrin ou à Tell es-Sâfiyé, mais toute précision est actuellement impossible.

Une des cinq villes philistines (Jos 13:3), résidence des Anakim (Jos 11:22) et non attribuée lors du partage de la Palestine. L'arche prise y séjourna quelque temps, au grand dommage des habitants (1Sa 5:8).

Patrie de Goliath (1Sa 17:4), elle subit le contre-coup de la mort du géant (1Sa 17:52) et servit même de refuge temporaire à David, fuyant loin de Saül (1Sa 21:10), pour tomber plus tard en sa possession, si l'on en croit 1Ch 18:1, qui complète 2Sa 8:1 ; ce qui expliquerait la présence, dans la garde de David, de 600 hommes de Gath, commandés par un certain Ittaï (2Sa 15:18-22). Cependant la ville avait conservé son roi, Akis, qui hébergea David (1Sa 21:10) ; Siméï, que Salomon avait mis à Jérusalem en résidence forcée (1Ro 2:36), fut exécuté pour s'en être absenté et être allé à Gath, chez ce même Akis (1Ro 2:40 et suivants).

Roboam fortifia Gath (2Ch 11:8) ; Hazaël, roi de Damas, s'en empara avant d'attaquer Jérusalem (2Ro 12:17), mais la ville retrouva son indépendance pour retomber plus tard sous les coups d'Ozias, roi de Juda (2Ch 26:6), et ceux plus rigoureux encore de l'Assyrie (allusion dans Am 6:2). Les prophètes qui censurent si rigoureusement les villes philistines ne mentionnent plus Gath, qui semble avoir disparu.. A. P.
