Le mot ne paraît qu'une fois dans nos Bibles françaises (Da 3:4) ; c'est la traduction de l'aram, karôz, probablement dérivé du grec kêrux (de kêrus-seïn= proclamer).

Le héraut était le porte-parole du roi, le crieur public des nouvelles. (cf. Ge 41:43, Est 6:9, Da 5:29, Sir 20:15) Le mot grec était souvent donné dans la société gréco-romaine au crieur officiel des jeux publics, puis à certains fonctionnaires des cultes des mystères et des temples païens.

L'Évangile a conféré à ce titre comme à d'autres une dignité insoupçonnée et une valeur universelle, et c'est le porteur de cette Bonne Nouvelle qui devient le héraut de Dieu, le « prédicateur » (1Ti 2:7,2Ti 1:11,2Pi 2:5). Voir Prédication.
