1. Fils d'Abraham et d'Agar, esclave égyptienne de Sara (Ge 16). Circoncis par son père à l'âge de 13 ans (Ge 17:26 ; coutume arabe), Ismaël fut chassé avec sa mère de la maison paternelle après la naissance du fils légitime Isaac (Ge 21:8,21). Selon la tradition rabbinique conservée par Paul (Ga 4:29), le fils de l'esclave aurait persécuté l'héritier. Protégé par Dieu, il grandit dans le désert, devint habile tireur d'arc et prit une femme égyptienne, qui lui donna douze fils (Ge 25:13-16). Il enterra son père (Ge 25:9) et mourut à l'âge de 137 ans. (Ge 25:17)

--La tradition sur Ismaël se compose de deux récits appartenant aux sources J (Ge 16) et E (Ge 21:8-21), accordées par le rédacteur de JE (Ge 16:9 et suivant), et le rédacteur sacerdotal (P) a ajouté les remarques chronologiques, l'enterrement d'Abraham, la circoncision et la descendance d'Ismaël (Ge 16:3,15,16 17:23-27 25:9,17). Par la variété et la vérité des situations et des caractères, par l'admirable concision et la rigoureuse unité de l'action, ces deux récits, ethnographiques et étiologiques à la fois, sont de véritables chefs-d'oeuvre. Comme tant d'autres traditions de la Genèse, ils nous donnent l'histoire d'une tribu, en rapportant celle d'un homme ou d'une famille. Ils nous racontent en effet ce que les Hébreux des IX e et VIII e siècles savaient des origines, du culte et de l'habitat de la tribu nomade des Ismaélites, qu'ils considéraient comme de lointains parents d'Israël. Ces bédouins descendent d'une tribu nommée Hagar (les Hagaréniens de 1Ch 5:10,19 27:31, Ps 83:7), vénèrent au puitsLachaï-roï le dieu El-roï et habitent la steppe de Paran, c-à-d, le désert d'et-Tih au nord de la péninsule sinaïtique. Redoutables par leur habileté à tirer de l'arc, ils tiennent farouchement à leur indépendance. Ismaël est « indomptable comme l'âne sauvage, sa main se lève contre tous et la main de tous contre lui ; il habite en face de tous ses frères » (Ge 16:12), dont il pille les champs et emmène les troupeaux. Comme tous les bédouins, il apprécie le commerce : ses caravanes portent des aromates en Egypte (Ge 37:25). De la description animée de la vie du bédouin, considérée non comme une malédiction, mais comme un sort plutôt enviable, et de certains traits qui semblent indiquer une organisation matriarcale, nous pouvons conclure que notre tradition, avant d'être fixée par J, avait déjà une existence séculaire, peut-être chez les Ismaélites eux-mêmes. A l'époque historique, la vieille tribu n'existe plus. Absalom place à la tête de son armée le fils d'un Ismaélite (2Sa 17:25, il faut lire « l'Ismaélite » d'après 1Ch 2:17) : c'est le dernier dont il soit fait mention. Plus tard le nom d'Ismaël désigne une confédération de douze tribus (Ge 25:13,16) de l'Arabie du Nord (Ge 25:18), et, d'après Jug 8:24, même les Madianites auraient fait partie de cette confédération. Mais on ignore la nature des rapports historiques qui liaient cette confédération à la vieille tribu du même nom.

5. Un des « grands du roi », de race royale (Jer 41:1) qui, à Mitspa, avec sa bande, assassina Guédalia que Nébucadnetsar avait établi gouverneur du pays de Juda privé de ses principaux habitants. Il est probable que ce crime fut de nature politique et qu'Ismaël voulut ainsi châtier celui qu'il considérait comme ayant trahi son pays en acceptant d'y représenter le pouvoir babylonien ; peut-être aussi était-il dépité de ce que Guédalia eût été choisi de préférence à quelque membre de la famille royale (Jer 40:7 et suivant). Jérémie avait au contraire prêché la soumission et soutenu Guédalia (Jer 40:5 et suivant). En tout cas, ce meurtre, ou plutôt ce massacre, commis dans des conditions particulièrement odieuses (Jer 40:13-41:10), répandit parmi les habitants de Juda la crainte des représailles de Nébucadnetsar, et fut le signal de leur exode vers l'Egypte, malgré les objurgations de Jérémie (Jer 42 Jer 43:1,7). Voir le résumé de cette histoire dans 2Ro 25:22-26. Ismaël s'enfuit chez les Ammonites, dont le roi Baalis était soupçonné d'avoir été l'instigateur de ce crime (Jer 40:13 41:15).

      1 Or, Saraï, femme d'Abram, ne lui avait point donné d'enfant ; et elle avait une servante égyptienne, nommée Agar.
      2 Et Saraï dit à Abram : Voici, l'Éternel m'a rendue stérile ; viens, je te prie, vers ma servante ; peut-être aurai-je des enfants par elle. Et Abram obéit à la voix de Saraï.
      3 Et Saraï, femme d'Abram, prit Agar, l'Égyptienne, sa servante, et la donna pour femme à Abram son mari, après qu'il eut demeuré dix ans au pays de Canaan.
      4 Il vint donc vers Agar, et elle conçut. Et quand elle vit qu'elle avait conçu, elle méprisa sa maîtresse.
      5 Alors Saraï dit à Abram : L'outrage qui m'est fait retombe sur toi. J'ai mis ma servante dans ton sein ; et depuis qu'elle a vu qu'elle est enceinte, elle me méprise. Que l'Éternel juge entre moi et toi.
      6 Et Abram répondit à Saraï : Voici, ta servante est entre tes mains, traite-la comme il te plaira. Et Saraï la maltraita, et elle s'enfuit de devant elle.
      7 Mais l'ange de l'Éternel la trouva près d'une source d'eau dans le désert, près de la source qui est sur le chemin de Shur.
      8 Et il lui dit : Agar, servante de Saraï, d'où viens-tu ? et où vas-tu ? Et elle répondit : Je fuis de devant Saraï ma maîtresse.
      9 Et l'ange de l'Éternel lui dit : Retourne vers ta maîtresse et humilie-toi sous sa main.
      10 Et l'ange de l'Éternel lui dit : Je multiplierai tellement ta postérité qu'on ne pourra la compter, tant elle sera nombreuse.
      11 Et l'ange de l'Éternel lui dit : Voici, tu es enceinte ; et tu enfanteras un fils, et tu le nommeras Ismaël (Dieu entend) ; car l'Éternel t'a entendue dans ton affliction.
      12 Il sera semblable à un âne sauvage ; sa main sera contre tous, et la main de tous contre lui ; et il habitera en face de tous ses frères.
      13 Et elle appela le nom de l'Éternel qui lui avait parlé Atta-El-Roï (tu es un Dieu qui voit). Car elle dit : N'ai-je pas même, ici, vu celui qui me voyait ?
      14 C'est pourquoi on appela ce puits, le puits de Lachaï-Roï (du Vivant qui me voit). Voici, il est entre Kadès et Béred.
      15 Et Agar enfanta un fils à Abram. Et Abram appela son fils, qu'Agar lui avait enfanté, Ismaël.
      16 Or, Abram était âgé de quatre-vingt-six ans, quand Agar enfanta Ismaël à Abram.

      Genèse 17

      23 Et Abraham prit Ismaël son fils et tous ceux qui étaient nés dans sa maison, et tous ceux qu'il avait achetés de son argent, tous les mâles parmi les gens de la maison d'Abraham ; et il circoncit leur chair en ce même jour-là, comme Dieu le lui avait dit.
      26 Abraham et Ismaël son fils furent circoncis en ce même jour-là.

      8 Et l'enfant grandit, et fut sevré. Et Abraham fit un grand festin le jour où Isaac fut sevré.
      9 Et Sara vit le fils d'Agar l'Égyptienne qu'elle avait enfanté à Abraham, qui riait.

      12 Mais Dieu dit à Abraham : Que cela ne te déplaise pas à cause de l'enfant et de ta servante. Quoi que te dise Sara, obéis à sa voix : car c'est en Isaac que ta postérité sera appelée de ton nom.
      13 Mais je ferai aussi du fils de la servante une nation, parce qu'il est ta race.
      14 Et Abraham se leva de bon matin, prit du pain et une outre d'eau, et les donna à Agar ; il les mit sur son épaule ; il lui donna aussi l'enfant et la renvoya. Et elle s'en alla et erra dans le désert de Béer-Shéba.
      15 Quand l'eau de l'outre fut épuisée, elle laissa l'enfant sous un des arbrisseaux.
      16 Et elle s'en alla, et s'assit vis-à-vis, environ à la distance d'une portée d'arc ; car elle dit : Que je ne voie pas mourir l'enfant. Et elle s'assit vis-à-vis, éleva la voix, et pleura.
      17 Et Dieu entendit la voix du jeune garçon, et l'ange de Dieu appela des cieux Agar, et lui dit : Qu'as-tu, Agar ? Ne crains point, car Dieu a entendu la voix du jeune garçon, là où il est.
      18 Lève-toi, prends le jeune garçon, et tiens-le par la main ; car je ferai de lui une grande nation.
      19 Et Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux, et elle vit un puits d'eau, et elle alla et remplit l'outre d'eau, et donna à boire au jeune garçon.
      20 Et Dieu fut avec le jeune garçon, qui devint grand, et habita dans le désert ; et il fut tireur d'arc.
      21 Et il habita dans le désert de Paran. Et sa mère lui prit une femme du pays d'Égypte.

      9 Et Isaac et Ismaël, ses fils, l'enterrèrent dans la caverne de Macpéla, dans le champ d'Ephron, fils de Tsohar, le Héthien, qui est en face de Mamré ;

      18 Et ses enfants habitèrent depuis Havila jusqu'à Shur, qui est en face de l'Égypte, quand on va vers l'Assyrie. Il s'établit en face de tous ses frères.

      25 Ensuite ils s'assirent pour manger le pain. Et, levant les yeux, ils regardèrent, et voici une caravane d'Ismaélites qui venait de Galaad ; et leurs chameaux, chargés d'aromates, de baume, et de myrrhe, allaient les porter en Égypte.

      14 Et lui dirent : Sais-tu bien que Baalis, roi des enfants d'Ammon, a envoyé Ismaël, fils de Néthania, pour t'ôter la vie ? Mais Guédalia, fils d'Achikam, ne les crut point.
      15 Alors Jochanan, fils de Karéach, dit secrètement à Guédalia, à Mitspa : Laisse-moi aller et frapper Ismaël, fils de Néthania, sans que personne le sache. Pourquoi t'ôterait-il la vie ? Pourquoi tous les Juifs qui se sont rassemblés vers toi, seraient-ils dispersés, et le reste de Juda périrait-il ?
      16 Mais Guédalia, fils d'Achikam, répondit à Jochanan, fils de Karéach : Ne fais pas cela, car ce que tu dis d'Ismaël est faux.

      Jérémie 41

      1 Or, au septième mois, Ismaël, fils de Néthania, fils d'Élishama, de la race royale et l'un des grands du roi, et dix hommes avec lui, vinrent vers Guédalia, fils d'Achikam, à Mitspa ; et ils mangèrent ensemble à Mitspa.
      2 Et Ismaël, fils de Néthania, se leva, ainsi que les dix hommes qui étaient avec lui, et ils frappèrent de l'épée Guédalia, fils d'Achikam, fils de Shaphan. Il fit ainsi mourir celui que le roi de Babylone avait établi sur le pays.
      3 Ismaël tua aussi tous les Juifs qui étaient avec Guédalia, à Mitspa, et les Caldéens, gens de guerre, qui se trouvaient là.
      4 Or il arriva, le jour après qu'on eut fait mourir Guédalia, avant que personne le sût,
      5 Que des hommes vinrent de Sichem, de Silo et de Samarie, au nombre de quatre-vingts, la barbe rasée et les vêtements déchirés, se faisant des incisions et tenant dans leurs mains des offrandes et de l'encens, pour les porter à la maison de l'Éternel.
      6 Alors Ismaël, fils de Néthania, sortit de Mitspa au-devant d'eux. Il marchait en pleurant ; et quand il les eut rencontrés, il leur dit : Venez vers Guédalia, fils d'Achikam.
      7 Et comme ils arrivaient au milieu de la ville, Ismaël, fils de Néthania, avec les hommes qui l'accompagnaient, les égorgea, et les jeta dans la citerne.
      8 Mais il se trouva parmi eux dix hommes qui dirent à Ismaël : Ne nous fais pas mourir ; car nous avons dans les champs des provisions cachées de froment, d'orge, d'huile et de miel. Et il s'arrêta et ne les fit pas mourir avec leurs frères.
      9 Or la citerne dans laquelle Ismaël jeta tous les corps des hommes qu'il tua à l'occasion de Guédalia, est celle que le roi Asa avait fait faire, lorsqu'il craignait Baesha, roi d'Israël. C'est cette citerne qu'Ismaël, fils de Néthania, remplit de gens qu'il avait tués.
      10 Ismaël emmena prisonniers tout le reste du peuple qui était à Mitspa, les filles du roi, et tous ceux qui étaient demeurés de reste à Mitspa, et que Nébuzar-Adan, chef des gardes, avait confiés à Guédalia, fils d'Achikam. Ismaël, fils de Néthania, les emmena prisonniers, et partit pour passer chez les enfants d'Ammon.
      15 Mais Ismaël, fils de Néthania, se sauva avec huit hommes devant Jochanan, et s'en alla chez les enfants d'Ammon.

      Jérémie 42

      1 Alors tous les chefs des troupes, Jochanan, fils de Karéach, Jézania, fils de Hoshaja, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, s'approchèrent,
      2 Et dirent à Jérémie, le prophète : Reçois favorablement notre prière et intercède auprès de l'Éternel ton Dieu pour nous, pour tout ce qui reste ! Car, de beaucoup que nous étions, nous sommes restés peu, comme tes yeux le voient.
      3 Et que l'Éternel ton Dieu nous indique le chemin que nous devons suivre et ce que nous avons à faire.
      4 Alors Jérémie, le prophète, leur répondit : J'entends. Voici, je vais prier l'Éternel votre Dieu, selon ce que vous avez dit ; et tout ce que l'Éternel vous répondra, je vous le déclarerai. Je ne vous en cacherai pas un mot.
      5 Et ils dirent à Jérémie : Que l'Éternel soit contre nous un témoin véritable et fidèle, si nous ne faisons tout ce que l'Éternel ton Dieu t'enverra nous dire.
      6 Que ce soit du bien ou du mal, nous obéirons à la voix de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, vers qui nous t'envoyons, afin qu'il nous arrive du bien quand nous aurons obéi à la voix de l'Éternel, notre Dieu.
      7 Et il arriva, au bout de dix jours, que la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie.
      8 Il appela donc Jochanan, fils de Karéach, et tous les chefs des troupes qui étaient avec lui, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand.
      9 Et il leur dit : Ainsi a dit l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël, vers qui vous m'avez envoyé pour présenter vos supplications devant lui :
      10 Si vous retournez et habitez dans ce pays, je vous y établirai, et ne vous détruirai point ; je vous planterai, et je ne vous arracherai point ; car je me repens du mal que je vous ai fait.
      11 Ne craignez point le roi de Babylone, dont vous avez peur ; ne le craignez pas, dit l'Éternel, car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et pour vous délivrer de sa main.
      12 Je vous ferai même obtenir miséricorde, tellement qu'il aura pitié de vous et qu'il vous fera retourner dans vos terres.
      13 Mais si vous dites : Nous ne demeurerons pas dans ce pays ; en sorte que, n'obéissant point à la voix de l'Éternel votre Dieu,
      14 Vous disiez : Non ; mais nous irons au pays d'Égypte, où nous ne verrons point de guerre, où nous n'entendrons pas le son de la trompette, où nous ne manquerons pas de pain, et nous y demeurerons ;
      15 En ce cas, écoutez maintenant la parole de l'Éternel, restes de Juda ! Ainsi a dit l'Éternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël : Si vous tournez le visage pour aller en Égypte, et si vous y allez demeurer,
      16 L'épée dont vous avez peur vous atteindra là, au pays d'Égypte ; et la famine qui vous met en inquiétude s'attachera à vous, là en Égypte, et vous y mourrez.
      17 Et il arrivera que tous les hommes qui auront tourné le visage pour aller en Égypte, afin d'y demeurer, mourront par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste ; et nul ne restera ni n'échappera devant le mal que je vais faire venir sur eux.
      18 Car ainsi a dit l'Éternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël : Comme ma colère, comme ma fureur s'est répandue sur les habitants de Jérusalem, ainsi ma fureur se répandra sur vous quand vous serez entrés en Égypte ; et vous serez un objet d'exécration et d'étonnement, de malédiction et d'opprobre ; et vous ne verrez plus ce lieu-ci !
      19 Restes de Juda, l'Éternel vous a dit : N'allez pas en Égypte ! Sachez certainement que je vous en fais aujourd'hui sommation.
      20 Car vous vous abusez au péril de votre vie. Car vous m'avez envoyé vers l'Éternel, votre Dieu, en disant : Intercède pour nous auprès de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, et nous déclare tout ce que l'Éternel, notre Dieu, te dira, et nous le ferons.
      21 Or je vous l'ai déclaré aujourd'hui ; mais vous n'écoutez pas la voix de l'Éternel votre Dieu, ni aucune des choses pour lesquelles il m'a envoyé vers vous.
      22 Maintenant donc, sachez certainement que vous mourrez par l'épée, par la famine et par la peste, au lieu où il vous plaît d'aller pour y demeurer.

      1 Or, aussitôt que Jérémie eut achevé de dire à tout le peuple toutes les paroles de l'Éternel, leur Dieu, pour lesquelles l'Éternel, leur Dieu, l'avait envoyé vers eux, savoir, toutes ces paroles-là,

      11 The angel of Yahweh said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.

      15 Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

      17 God heard the voice of the boy. The angel of God called to Hagar out of the sky, and said to her, "What ails you, Hagar? Don't be afraid. For God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.
      18 Get up, lift up the boy, and hold him in your hand. For I will make him a great nation."
      19 God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy drink.
      20 God was with the boy, and he grew. He lived in the wilderness, and became, as he grew up, an archer.
      21 He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother took a wife for him out of the land of Egypt.

      18 For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: As my anger and my wrath has been poured forth on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my wrath be poured forth on you, when you shall enter into Egypt; and you shall be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.
      19 Yahweh has spoken concerning you, remnant of Judah, Don't you go into Egypt: know certainly that I have testified to you this day.
      20 For you have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for you sent me to Yahweh your God, saying, Pray for us to Yahweh our God; and according to all that Yahweh our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do it:
      21 and I have this day declared it to you; but you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh your God in anything for which he has sent me to you.
      22 Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place where you desire to go to live there.
