(hébreu Yichma-El=~Die, u entend ; babyl. Yachmakh-Èl)

1. Fils d'Abraham et d'Agar, esclave égyptienne de Sara (Ge 16). Circoncis par son père à l'âge de 13 ans (Ge 17:26 ; coutume arabe), Ismaël fut chassé avec sa mère de la maison paternelle après la naissance du fils légitime Isaac (Ge 21:8,21). Selon la tradition rabbinique conservée par Paul (Ga 4:29), le fils de l'esclave aurait persécuté l'héritier. Protégé par Dieu, il grandit dans le désert, devint habile tireur d'arc et prit une femme égyptienne, qui lui donna douze fils (Ge 25:13-16). Il enterra son père (Ge 25:9) et mourut à l'âge de 137 ans. (Ge 25:17)

--La tradition sur Ismaël se compose de deux récits appartenant aux sources J (Ge 16) et E (Ge 21:8-21), accordées par le rédacteur de JE (Ge 16:9 et suivant), et le rédacteur sacerdotal (P) a ajouté les remarques chronologiques, l'enterrement d'Abraham, la circoncision et la descendance d'Ismaël (Ge 16:3,15,16 17:23-27 25:9,17). Par la variété et la vérité des situations et des caractères, par l'admirable concision et la rigoureuse unité de l'action, ces deux récits, ethnographiques et étiologiques à la fois, sont de véritables chefs-d'oeuvre. Comme tant d'autres traditions de la Genèse, ils nous donnent l'histoire d'une tribu, en rapportant celle d'un homme ou d'une famille. Ils nous racontent en effet ce que les Hébreux des IX e et VIII e siècles savaient des origines, du culte et de l'habitat de la tribu nomade des Ismaélites, qu'ils considéraient comme de lointains parents d'Israël. Ces bédouins descendent d'une tribu nommée Hagar (les Hagaréniens de 1Ch 5:10,19 27:31, Ps 83:7), vénèrent au puitsLachaï-roï le dieu El-roï et habitent la steppe de Paran, c-à-d, le désert d'et-Tih au nord de la péninsule sinaïtique. Redoutables par leur habileté à tirer de l'arc, ils tiennent farouchement à leur indépendance. Ismaël est « indomptable comme l'âne sauvage, sa main se lève contre tous et la main de tous contre lui ; il habite en face de tous ses frères » (Ge 16:12), dont il pille les champs et emmène les troupeaux. Comme tous les bédouins, il apprécie le commerce : ses caravanes portent des aromates en Egypte (Ge 37:25). De la description animée de la vie du bédouin, considérée non comme une malédiction, mais comme un sort plutôt enviable, et de certains traits qui semblent indiquer une organisation matriarcale, nous pouvons conclure que notre tradition, avant d'être fixée par J, avait déjà une existence séculaire, peut-être chez les Ismaélites eux-mêmes. A l'époque historique, la vieille tribu n'existe plus. Absalom place à la tête de son armée le fils d'un Ismaélite (2Sa 17:25, il faut lire « l'Ismaélite » d'après 1Ch 2:17) : c'est le dernier dont il soit fait mention. Plus tard le nom d'Ismaël désigne une confédération de douze tribus (Ge 25:13,16) de l'Arabie du Nord (Ge 25:18), et, d'après Jug 8:24, même les Madianites auraient fait partie de cette confédération. Mais on ignore la nature des rapports historiques qui liaient cette confédération à la vieille tribu du même nom.

4. Un des chefs militaires avec lesquels le grand-prêtre Jéhojada organisa le complot contre Athalie pour Joas (2Ch 23:1).

5. Un des « grands du roi », de race royale (Jer 41:1) qui, à Mitspa, avec sa bande, assassina Guédalia que Nébucadnetsar avait établi gouverneur du pays de Juda privé de ses principaux habitants. Il est probable que ce crime fut de nature politique et qu'Ismaël voulut ainsi châtier celui qu'il considérait comme ayant trahi son pays en acceptant d'y représenter le pouvoir babylonien ; peut-être aussi était-il dépité de ce que Guédalia eût été choisi de préférence à quelque membre de la famille royale (Jer 40:7 et suivant). Jérémie avait au contraire prêché la soumission et soutenu Guédalia (Jer 40:5 et suivant). En tout cas, ce meurtre, ou plutôt ce massacre, commis dans des conditions particulièrement odieuses (Jer 40:13-41:10), répandit parmi les habitants de Juda la crainte des représailles de Nébucadnetsar, et fut le signal de leur exode vers l'Egypte, malgré les objurgations de Jérémie (Jer 42 Jer 43:1,7). Voir le résumé de cette histoire dans 2Ro 25:22-26. Ismaël s'enfuit chez les Ammonites, dont le roi Baalis était soupçonné d'avoir été l'instigateur de ce crime (Jer 40:13 41:15).

  2 Sarai said to Abram, "See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my handmaid. It may be that I will obtain children by her." Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
  
  3 Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

  14 saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:

  18 For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: As my anger and my wrath has been poured forth on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my wrath be poured forth on you, when you shall enter into Egypt; and you shall be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.
  
  19 Yahweh has spoken concerning you, remnant of Judah, Don't you go into Egypt: know certainly that I have testified to you this day.
  
  20 For you have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for you sent me to Yahweh your God, saying, Pray for us to Yahweh our God; and according to all that Yahweh our God shall say, so declare to us, and we will do it:
  
  21 and I have this day declared it to you; but you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh your God in anything for which he has sent me to you.
  
  22 Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place where you desire to go to live there.

  1 Saraï, femme d’Abram, ne lui avait pas donné d’enfant. Elle avait une servante égyptienne dont le nom était Agar.
  
  2 Saraï dit à Abram : Puisque l’Éternel m’a empêchée d’enfanter va donc vers ma servante ; peut-être aurai-je un fils par elle. Abram écouta la voix de Saraï.
  
  3 Alors Saraï, femme d’Abram, prit sa servante égyptienne Agar, et la donna comme femme à Abram, son mari, après qu’il eut habité dix ans dans le pays de Canaan.
  
  4 Il alla vers Agar, et elle devint enceinte. Quand elle se vit enceinte, elle regarda sa maîtresse avec mépris.
  
  5 Alors Saraï dit à Abram : L’outrage qui m’est fait retombe sur toi. C’est moi-même qui ai mis ma servante dans ton sein ; et, maintenant qu’elle se voit enceinte, elle me regarde avec mépris. Que l’Éternel soit juge entre toi et moi !
  
  6 Abram répondit à Saraï : Ta servante est entre tes mains ; agis à son égard comme tu le trouveras bon. Alors Saraï la maltraita, et (Agar) prit la fuite loin d’elle.
  
  7 L’ange de l’Éternel la trouva près d’une source d’eau dans le désert, près de la source qui est sur le chemin de Chour.
  
  8 Il dit : Agar, servante de Saraï, d’où viens-tu et où vas-tu ? Elle répondit : J’ai pris la fuite loin de Saraï, ma maîtresse.
  
  9 L’ange de l’Éternel lui dit : Retourne chez ta maîtresse et humilie-toi devant elle.
  
  10 L’ange de l’Éternel lui dit : Je multiplierai beaucoup ta descendance, et on ne pourra la compter tant elle sera nombreuse.
  
  11 L’ange de l’Éternel lui dit : Te voici enceinte ; Tu vas accoucher d’un fils, A qui tu donneras le nom d’Ismaël ; Car l’Éternel t’a entendue dans ton humiliation.
  
  12 Il sera comme un âne sauvage, Sa main sera contre tous, Et la main de tous sera contre lui ; Il demeurera face à tous ses frères.
  
  13 Elle appela l’Éternel qui lui avait parlé, du nom de : Atta-El-Roï, car, dit-elle : Ai-je (rien) vu ici après qu’il m’a vue ?
  
  14 C’est pourquoi l’on a appelé ce puits le puits de Lahaï-roï ; il est entre Qadech et Béred.
  
  15 Agar donna un fils à Abram ; et Abram appela Ismaël le fils que Agar lui avait donné.
  
  16 Abram était âgé de 86 ans lorsque Agar lui donna Ismaël.
  
  Genèse 17
  
  23 Abraham prit son fils Ismaël, tous ceux qui étaient nés dans sa maison et tous ceux qu’il avait acquis au prix de son argent, tous les mâles parmi les gens de sa maison, il les circoncit le jour même, comme Dieu le lui avait dit.
  
  26 Ce jour même, Abraham fut circoncis, ainsi que son fils Ismaël.

  8 L’enfant grandit et fut sevré. Abraham fit un grand festin le jour où Isaac fut sevré.
  
  9 Sara vit rire le fils que l’Égyptienne Agar avait donné à Abraham.
  
  10 Elle dit à Abraham : Chasse cette servante et son fils, car le fils de cette servante n’héritera pas avec mon fils Isaac.
  
  11 Cette parole déplut fort à Abraham, à cause de son fils.
  
  12 Mais Dieu dit à Abraham : N’aie pas de déplaisir, à cause du garçon et de ta servante. Accorde à Sara tout ce qu’elle te demandera ; car c’est par Isaac que tu auras une descendance qui porte ton nom.
  
  13 Je ferai aussi une nation du fils de ta servante ; car il est ta descendance.
  
  14 Abraham se leva de bon matin ; il prit du pain et une outre d’eau qu’il donna à Agar et plaça sur son épaule ; (il lui remit) aussi l’enfant et il la renvoya. Elle s’en alla et s’égara dans le désert de Beér-Chéba.
  
  15 Quand l’outre d’eau fut épuisée, elle laissa l’enfant sous l’un des arbrisseaux,
  
  16 pour aller s’asseoir vis-à-vis, à une portée d’arc, car elle disait : Que je ne voie pas mourir l’enfant ! Elle s’assit donc vis-à-vis (de lui) et se mit à sangloter.
  
  17 Dieu entendit la voix du garçon ; et l’ange de Dieu appela Agar du haut du ciel et lui dit : Qu’as-tu, Agar ? Sois sans crainte, car Dieu a entendu la voix du garçon, là où il est.
  
  18 Lève-toi, prends le garçon, saisis-le par la main ; car je ferai de lui une grande nation.
  
  19 Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux, et elle vit un puits d’eau ; elle alla remplir l’outre d’eau et fit boire le garçon.
  
  20 Dieu fut avec le garçon, qui grandit, habita dans le désert et devint tireur à l’arc.
  
  21 Il habita dans le désert de Parân et sa mère lui procura pour femme une Égyptienne.

  9 Isaac et Ismaël, ses fils, l’ensevelirent dans la grotte de Makpéla, dans le champ d’Ephrôn, fils de Tsohar, le Hittite, vis-à-vis de Mamré.
  
  13 Voici les noms des fils d’Ismaël, avec le nom de leurs lignées : Nebayoth, premier-né d’Ismaël, Qédar, Adbeél, Mibsam,
  
  14 Michma, Douma, Massa,
  
  15 Hadad, Téma, Yetour, Naphich et Qedma. Ce sont là les fils d’Ismaël ;
  
  16 ce sont là leurs noms avec leurs campements et leurs agglomérations. Douze princes (étaient à la tête) de leurs peuplades.
  
  17 La durée de la vie d’Ismaël fut de 137 ans. Il expira et mourut, et il fut réuni à ses ancêtres décédés.
  
  18 (Les Ismaélites) demeurèrent depuis Havila jusqu’à Chour, qui est en face de l’Égypte, en allant vers l’Assyrie. Ismaël s’établit en face de tous ses frères.

  13 Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les chefs de l’armée qui étaient dans les campagnes, vinrent auprès de Guedalia à Mitspa.
  
  14 et lui dirent : Sais-tu bien que Baalis, roi des Ammonites, a envoyé Ismaël, fils de Netania, pour te frapper à mort ? Mais Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, ne les crut pas.
  
  15 Et Yahanân, fils de Qaréah, dit secrètement à Guedalia, à Mitspa : Permets que j’aille frapper Ismaël, fils de Netania. Personne ne le saura. Pourquoi te frapperait-il à mort ? Pourquoi tous ceux de Juda rassemblés auprès de toi seraient-ils disséminés, et le reste de Juda serait-il perdu ?
  
  16 Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam répondit à Yohanân, fils de Qaréah : Ne fais pas cela ; car ce que tu dis sur Ismaël est faux.
  
  Jérémie 41
  
  1 Au septième mois, Ismaël, fils de Netania, fils d’Élichama, de la race royale, vint avec des grands du roi et dix hommes auprès de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, à Mitspa. Là, ils mangèrent ensemble à Mitspa.
  
  2 Alors Ismaël, fils de Netania, se leva avec les dix hommes qui étaient avec lui, et ils frappèrent de l’épée Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, fils de Chaphân. Il fit ainsi mourir celui que le roi de Babylone avait établi sur le pays.
  
  3 Ismaël tua encore tous les Juifs qui étaient auprès de Guedalia à Mitspa, et les Chaldéens, les hommes de guerre, qui se trouvaient là.
  
  4 Le second jour après l’assassinat de Guedalia, tandis que personne n’en savait rien,
  
  5 arrivèrent de Sichem, de Silo et de Samarie, quatre-vingts hommes qui avaient la barbe rasée et les vêtements déchirés, et qui s’étaient fait des incisions ; ils avaient en main des offrandes et de l’encens, pour les présenter à la Maison de l’Éternel.
  
  6 Ismaël, fils de Netania, sortit de Mitspa au-devant d’eux ; il marchait en pleurant. Lorsqu’il les atteignit, il leur dit : Venez chez Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam.
  
  7 Mais quand ils arrivèrent au milieu de la ville, Ismaël, fils de Netania, les égorgea (et les jeta) dans la citerne, avec l’aide des gens qui étaient avec lui.
  
  8 Mais il se trouva parmi eux dix hommes qui dirent à Ismaël : Ne nous fais pas mourir, car nous avons des provisions cachées dans les champs, du froment, de l’orge, de l’huile et du miel. Alors il renonça à les faire mourir avec leurs frères.
  
  9 La citerne dans laquelle Ismaël jeta tous les cadavres des hommes qu’il frappa près de Guedalia est celle qu’avait faite le roi Asa, à cause de Baécha, roi d’Israël ; c’est elle qu’Ismaël, fils de Netania, remplit de cadavres.
  
  10 Ismaël emmena captifs tout le reste du peuple qui était à Mitspa, les filles du roi et tous ceux du peuple qui étaient restés à Mitspa, que Nebouzaradân, chef des gardes, avait confiés à Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam ; Ismaël, fils de Netania, les emmena captifs et partit pour se rendre chez les Ammonites.
  
  15 Mais Ismaël, fils de Netania s’échappa avec huit hommes devant Yohanân et se rendit chez les Ammonites.
  
  Jérémie 42
  
  1 Tous les chefs de l’armée, Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, Yezania, fils de Hochaya, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, s’approchèrent
  
  2 et dirent au prophète Jérémie : Que notre supplication parvienne devant toi ; prie l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en notre faveur, en faveur de tout ce reste. Car nous étions beaucoup et nous restons en petit nombre, ainsi que tes yeux le voient.
  
  3 Que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, nous révèle la voie que nous devons suivre et ce que nous avons à faire !
  
  4 Le prophète Jérémie leur dit : J’entends ; voici que je vais prier l’Éternel, votre Dieu, selon vos paroles ; et je vous révélerai, sans rien vous cacher, toute parole que l’Éternel vous répondra.
  
  5 Ils dirent à Jérémie : Que l’Éternel soit contre nous un témoin véritable et fidèle, si nous n’agissons pas selon toute parole que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura envoyée pour nous !
  
  6 Que ce soit du bien ou du mal, nous obéirons à la voix de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, vers qui nous-mêmes nous t’envoyons ; ainsi nous serons heureux pour avoir obéi à la voix de l’Éternel, notre Dieu.
  
  7 Dix jours après, la parole de l’Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie.
  
  8 Et Jérémie appela Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, tous les chefs de l’armée qui étaient avec lui et tout le peuple depuis le plus petit jusqu’au plus grand.
  
  9 Il leur dit : Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël, vers qui vous m’avez envoyé pour que je fasse parvenir votre supplication devant lui :
  
  10 Si vous continuez à habiter dans ce pays, je vous y édifierai et je ne vous détruirai pas, je vous planterai et je ne vous arracherai pas ; car je regrette le mal que je vous ai fait.
  
  11 Ne craignez pas le roi de Babylone, devant qui vous êtes dans la crainte, ne le craignez pas, – oracle de l’Éternel –, car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de sa main.
  
  12 Je vous témoignerai de la compassion, et il aura compassion de vous, et il vous fera revenir sur votre sol.
  
  13 Mais si vous dites : Nous n’habiterons pas ce pays ! Si vous n’écoutez pas la voix de l’Éternel, votre Dieu,
  
  14 et si vous dites : Non, nous irons au pays d’Égypte, où nous ne verrons pas de guerre, où nous n’entendrons pas le son du cor, où nous ne manquerons pas de pain, et c’est là que nous habiterons, –
  
  15 alors écoutez donc la parole de l’Éternel, restes de Juda ! Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : Si vous vous décidez à vous rendre en Égypte, si vous allez y séjourner,
  
  16 l’épée que vous craignez vous atteindra là au pays d’Égypte, la famine, objet de vos inquiétudes, s’attachera à vous là en Égypte, c’est là que vous mourrez.
  
  17 Tous ceux qui se décideront à se rendre en Égypte pour y séjourner mourront par l’épée, par la famine ou par la peste, et il n’y aura pour eux ni survivant, ni rescapé devant le malheur que je ferai venir sur eux.
  
  18 Car ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : De même que ma colère et ma fureur se sont répandues sur les habitants de Jérusalem, de même ma fureur se répandra sur vous, si vous allez en Égypte ; vous serez un sujet d’imprécation, de désolation, de mépris et de déshonneur, et vous ne verrez plus ce lieu.
  
  19 Restes de Juda, l’Éternel vous le dit : N’allez pas en Égypte ! Sachez-le bien : je vous en conjure aujourd’hui.
  
  20 Vous vous trompez vous-mêmes, car vous m’avez envoyé vers l’Éternel, votre Dieu, en disant : Prie l’Éternel, notre Dieu, en notre faveur, et tout ce que l’Éternel, notre Dieu dira, révèle-le nous, et nous le ferons.
  
  21 Je vous l’ai révélé aujourd’hui ; mais vous n’écoutez pas la voix de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, ni tout ce qu’il m’a chargé de vous dire.
  
  22 Sachez-le bien maintenant : vous mourrez par l’épée, par la famine ou par la peste dans le lieu où vous voulez aller pour y séjourner.
  
  Jérémie 43
  
  1 Lorsque Jérémie eut achevé de dire à tout le peuple toutes les paroles de l’Éternel, leur Dieu, toutes ces paroles que l’Éternel, leur Dieu, l’avait chargé de leur dire,
  
  7 Ils allèrent au pays d’Égypte, car ils n’écoutèrent pas la voix de l’Éternel, et ils arrivèrent à Tahpanhès.
