Ce mot hébreu a la même racine que le mot grec Ion (Ioniens).

Mais dans l'A. T, il désigne en général les Grecs et la Grèce (voir ce mot).

Dans la Table des Peuples (voir art.), Javan (Ge 10:2,4) est un des sept fils de Japhet et père de : Élisa (rivages méditerranéens), Tarsis (l'Espagne), Kittim (Chypre) et Rodanim (Rhodes) ; voir les art. sur ces divers noms. Javan apparaît comme nation maritime dans ses rapports avec Tyr (Joe 3:6, Eze 27:13), comme l'un des pays lointains jusqu'où rayonnera la gloire de l'Éternel (Esa 66:19), comme la puissance gréco-macédonienne qui s'est rendue maîtresse de l'Orient et opprime le peuple juif (Za 9:13, Da 8:21 10:20 11:2).

Mais dans Eze 27:19 il s'agit d'une tribu de l'Arabie heureuse qui trafiquait avec Tyr, et non plus de la Grèce ; peut-être y a-t-il là une erreur de texte.
