Définition biblique de Jébus, Jébusites, Jébusiens :

Jébus serait primitivement le nom donné à Jérusalem. Lors de la conquête de Canaan par les Israélites, Adoni-Tsédek était roi de Jérusalem. Les Israélites ne purent chasser les Jébusiens de la ville et les tolérèrent à côté d'eux jusqu'aux jours de David.

I. ORIGINES.

D'après Jug 19:11 et 1Ch 11:4, Jébus serait primitivement le nom donné à Jérusalem. Mais nous savons d'autre part (tablettes de Tell el-Amarna) que, dès le XV e siècle av. J. -C, la ville s'appelait Jérusalem (Ourousalim). Il est peu probable que le clan jébusite existât à cette époque reculée. Nous n'en avons aucune preuve ; tout ce que nous savons est que, lors de la conquête de Canaan par les Israélites, Adoni-Tsédek était roi de Jérusalem et que les Israélites ne purent chasser les Jébusiens de la ville et les tolérèrent à côté d'eux jusqu'aux jours de David. (cf. Jos 10:3 15:63, Jug 1:21)

II. HISTOIRE.

Jébus ne se trouve que dans les deux premiers passages cités ; ce doit être une appellation occasionnelle tirée du nom des habitants. La ville fut prise par David (2Sa 5:6,8) et porta à dater de ce jour le nom de cité de David : cette cité était constituée par l'acropole de Sion, bâtie sur une colline escarpée (fig. 116), au Sud-E, de la ville actuelle de Jérusalem, qui ne la comprend plus dans ses murs (voir les art. sur Jérusalem). En raison de sa position élevée, dominant de beaucoup plus haut qu'aujourd'hui la rencontre de deux vallées, les Jébusiens croyaient leur ville imprenable. Quand David en préparait le siège, ils se moquèrent de lui et lui dirent : « Les aveugles et les boiteux suffiraient pour te repousser ! » David s'en empara cependant et sut tirer parti de sa situation remarquable : il la fortifia et en fit sa capitale.

Les Jébusiens sont placés, dans le récit de l'exploration de Canaan, (E, No 13:29) au milieu des Héthiens et des Amoréens, et considérés comme des gens qui habitent la montagne. C'est la seule fois que E les mentionne. D les cite plusieurs fois au milieu des autres nations palestiniennes, mais ne dit rien de leur histoire. On retrouve encore leurs noms dans la tradition P (Jos 15:8), dans Esd 9:1, Ne 9:8 et dans Za 9:7. D'après 2Sa 24:16,24,

David acheta pendant la peste l'aire d'un Jébusien nommé Aravna, pour y élever un autel à l'Éternel ; ceci laisse entrevoir que même quand David eut pris la ville, les Jébusiens continuèrent à y habiter avec les Israélites. De quelle race étaient-ils ? Il est assez difficile de le dire. Le nom d'Adoni-Tsédek semble indiquer une origine sémitique (P). Ed. F.
