6. Roi de Juda (de 872 à 850 environ). Jusqu'à lui l'inimitié s'était perpétuée entre les deux royaumes (1Ro 14:30 15:6,16 2Ch 13:2 et suivants) ; sous son règne, au contraire, Juda s'allia à Israël où régnait la dynastie d'Omri. Le mariage du fils de Josaphat, Joram, avec la fille d'Achab (2Ro 8:18) vint encore consolider ce pacte. Des Judéens participèrent aux expéditions guerrières d'Israël (1Ro 22:2 et suivants, 2Ro 3:7 et suivants). Néanmoins Juda n'était pas entièrement entraîné dans l'orbite de son voisin ; Josaphat, par ex., déclina l'offre que lui fit le roi israélite de participer à ses entreprises commerciales, d'ailleurs malheureuses (1Ro 22:49 et suivant). A l'intérieur, ce roi suivit les traces de son père Asa, en combattant les rites immoraux d'origine cananéenne (1Ro 22:47 15:12). De là, sans doute, l'appréciation favorable dont les générations ultérieures entourèrent sa mémoire (1Ro 22:43, amplifié par 2Ch 17) ; comp. Racine, Athalie, I, 1:78 : « Vous, nourri dans les camps du saint roi Josaphat. » Il est cité dans Mt 1:8.

      1 Son fils Josaphat lui succéda sur le trône. Il développa ses forces pour tenir tête au royaume d’Israël :
      2 il installa des garnisons dans toutes les villes fortifiées de Juda et il établit des postes militaires à travers tout le pays de Juda, ainsi que dans les villes d’Ephraïm que son père Asa avait conquises.
      3 L’Eternel fut avec Josaphat parce qu’il suivait, dans la première partie de sa vie, l’exemple laissé par son ancêtre David, et qu’il ne s’attacha pas aux *Baals.
      4 Au contraire, il s’attacha au Dieu de ses ancêtres et vécut selon ses commandements, contrairement à ce que l’on faisait en Israël.
      5 Aussi l’Eternel affermit-il son pouvoir royal et tout Juda lui apportait des présents. Il fut comblé de richesses et de gloire.
      6 Il s’enhardit pour suivre les chemins prescrits par l’Eternel, de sorte qu’il supprima encore les *hauts-lieux et les poteaux sacrés d’*Achéra dans le pays de Juda.
      7 La troisième année de son règne, il envoya dans les villes de Juda quelques-uns de ses hauts fonctionnaires, Ben-Haïl, Abdias, Zacharie, Netaneél et Michée, pour enseigner les habitants.
      8 Ils étaient accompagnés des lévites Chemaeyahou, Netanyahou, Zebadyahou, Asaël, Chemiramoth, Jonathan, Adonyahou, Tobyahou et Tob-Adoniya ainsi que des prêtres Elichama et Yoram.
      9 Ils enseignèrent donc en Juda, ayant avec eux le livre de la Loi de l’Eternel. Ils parcoururent toutes les villes de Juda pour enseigner le peuple.
      10 A cause de l’Eternel, une terreur s’empara de tous les royaumes environnant Juda, de sorte que personne n’osa faire la guerre à Josaphat.
      11 Des Philistins lui apportaient des présents et un tribut en argent. Les nomades arabes lui apportaient aussi du petit bétail : 7 700 béliers et 7 700 boucs.
      12 Josaphat devint de plus en plus puissant. Il construisit en Juda des citadelles et des villes-entrepôts.
      13 Il disposait de provisions abondantes dans les villes judéennes, et des vaillants guerriers étaient stationnés à Jérusalem.
      14 Ces derniers étaient répartis selon leurs groupes familiaux. Pour Juda, voici les chefs de « milliers » : le chef Adna, qui commandait 300 000 vaillants guerriers ;
      15 à ses côtés se trouvait le chef Yohanân qui commandait 280 000 hommes ;
      16 à ses côtés, Amasia, fils de Zikri, qui s’était volontairement engagé pour l’Eternel et qui commandait 200 000 vaillants guerriers.
      17 De Benjamin, il y avait : Elyada, un vaillant héros, qui commandait 200 000 hommes armés de l’arc et du bouclier ;
      18 à ses côtés Yehozabad qui commandait 180 000 hommes équipés pour la guerre.
      19 Tous ceux-ci étaient au service du roi, auxquels il faut ajouter ceux que le roi avait mis en garnison dans les villes fortifiées sur tout le territoire de Juda.

      10 The fear of Yahweh fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.
      11 Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and silver for tribute; the Arabians also brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred male goats.
      12 Jehoshaphat grew great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles and cities of store.
      13 He had many works in the cities of Judah; and men of war, mighty men of valor, in Jerusalem.
      14 This was the numbering of them according to their fathers' houses: Of Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him mighty men of valor three hundred thousand;
      15 and next to him Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred eighty thousand;
      16 and next to him Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself to Yahweh; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valor.
      17 Of Benjamin: Eliada a mighty man of valor, and with him two hundred thousand armed with bow and shield;
      18 and next to him Jehozabad and with him one hundred eighty thousand ready prepared for war.
      19 These were those who waited on the king, besides those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.
