KIRJATH-JÉARIM

(=ville des forêts). Identifiée ordinairement aujourd'hui avec le village d'Abou Ghôch, l'ancienne Karyet el-Énab (=ville des raisins), sur la route de Jérusalem à Jaffa.

Une des villes des Gabaonites (Jos 9:17), qui s'appelait, ou Kirjath (Jos 18:28 et suivant), ou Kirjath-Baal (Jos 15:60), ou Baala (Jos 15:9 et suivant, 1Ch 13:6), ou Baalé-Juda (2Sa 6:2). A la limite de Juda et de Benjamin (Jos 15:9 18:14).

L'arche, retour de Philistie, y fut déposée dans la maison d'Abinadab (1Sa 7:1), d'où elle fut ramenée solennellement à Jérusalem, au temps de David (2Sa 6:2,1Ch 13:5,2Ch 1:4). De Kirjath-Jéarim était le prophète Urie, contemporain de Jérémie (Jer 26:20). Après l'exil, la localité fut réoccupée (Esd 2:25, Ne 7:29).

Les tables généalogiques des Chron, rattachaient Kirjath-Jéarim à la descendance de Caleb (1Ch 2:50,53). Les croisés, qui s'y installèrent, y protégeaient la circulation entre Jaffa et Jérusalem. Au XIX° siècle, le cheikh Abou Ghôch se fit une renommée de pillard en rançonnant impitoyablement toutes les caravanes ; la localité prit son nom, qu'elle a conservé. L'église médiévale, propriété de la France, peut avoir été construite pour rappeler le souvenir de la rencontre avec Jésus des « pèlerins d'Emmaüs » (voir Emmaus). A. P.

      28 Zelah, Eleph, the Jebusite (the same is Jerusalem), Gibeath, and Kiriath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.
