LAINE

L'importance de la tonte des brebis comme joyeuse fête familiale en Israël (1Sa 25:4-8,2Sa 13:23 et suivants) donne une idée de l'importance de la production lainière (voir Brebis, et, pour la préparation de la laine, Filage et tissage).

Les vêtements de laine étaient les plus employés en Palestine, étant les plus pratiques en pays chaud pour les manteaux, burnous et autres pièces d'habillement de dessus, alors que pour les vêtements de dessous ceux de lin (voir ce mot) étaient préférables (Eze 44:17).

Aussi la laine était-elle un objet de grand commerce dans l'Orient biblique (Pr 31:13,21,2Ro 3:4, Os 2:5-9, Eze 27:18). Il fallait la protéger des teignes (voir ce mot) et autres chenilles ou larves d'insectes (Esa 51:8) ; c'est sans doute à de tels dégâts que fait allusion Jésus quand il parle des trésors que détruisent les vers : (Mt 6:20) ces trésors consistaient donc en étoffes de grand prix.

La laine pouvait être teinte en diverses couleurs : dans Heb 9:19, la mention de la laine écarlate (comme celle de l'eau, de l'aspersion, etc.) est ajoutée au récit de Ex 24:3,8 d'après Le 14:4 et des données rabbiniques qu'on trouve aussi chez l'historien Josèphe. Toutefois la laine la plus commune était la laine blanche ; elle est citée comme image proverbiale de pureté immaculée (Esa 1:18, Ps 147:16, Da 7:9 =Ap 1:14).
