LÈVRES

(hébreu sâphâh, grec kheïlè). Ce terme se trouve surtout dans la poésie hébraïque, et le N.T. ne l'emploie que dans des citations poétiques de l'A.T. C'est dire qu'il revêt généralement un sens figuré, imagé ou allégorique.

Notons d'abord quelques passages où il garde son sens propre et littéral (Ps 45:3, Pr 24:26, Ca 4:3-11 5:13). Les lèvres remuent pour la parole, même sans se faire entendre (1Sa 8:12 et suivant, Job 16:5) ; elles expriment rire et sourire (Job 8:21), ou tremblent de terreur (Hab 3:16). Dans 2Ro 19:28 parallèle Esa 37:29 est une allusion au moyen de dompter le cheval en lui mettant un mors entre les lèvres (Vers. Syn., bouche).

Le plus généralement la Bible désigne les lèvres comme instrument de la parole (Job 27:4, Ps 119:171, Pr 15:7 24:2, Mal 2:7). Un » homme de lèvres » est un grand parleur (Job 11:2) ; de vains propos ne sont que « paroles des lèvres » (2Ro 18:20, Ps 106:33, Pr 14:23), parfois fort différentes des sentiments du coeur (Esa 29:13, cité Mr 7:6). Mais les lèvres peuvent aussi célébrer le Seigneur (Ps 63:4, Esa 57:19), et l'hommage des lèvres est un sacrifice qu'il agrée (Os 14:2, Heb 13:15).

Les lèvres deviennent donc l'équivalent de la bouche et de la langue (voir ces mots) pour représenter le langage, et par là symboliser les qualités et les défauts qui s'y expriment :

elles sont qualifiées :

incirconcises (Ex 6:12,30), impures (Esa 6:5), flatteuses (Ps 12:3 et suivant), menteuses (Ps 31:19 120:2, Esa 59:3), fausses (Pr 4:24 12:22), injustes (Pr 17:4),

ou bien au contraire :

sincères (Ps 17:1), justes (Pr 16:13, VS. : paroles), intelligentes (Pr 20:15), etc.

Aussi le croyant demande-t-il à Dieu de veiller sur ses lèvres (Ps 141:3, Sir 22:27) ;

Lui, il peut :

les purifier (Esa 6:7, Sop 3:9), les inspirer (Da 10:16).
Par anthropomorphisme il est attribué à Dieu des lèvres qui commandent (Ps 17:4, Vers. Syn. : bouche) ou dont le souffle fait périr comme une haleine empoisonnée (Esa 11:4).

Le mouvement des lèvres fait curieusement image pour trahir les sentiments :

ricaner en grimaçant, c'est en hébreu « fendre les lèvres » (Ps 22:8) ; se mettre à parler, c'est ouvrir les lèvres (Job 11:5) ; les ouvrir trop, mène à la ruine (Pr 13:3), car c'est le médisant qui aime à ouvrir ses lèvres (Pr 20:19) ; être réservé, c'est retenir ou fermer ses lèvres (Pr 10:19 17:28), mais ce peut être aussi dissimulation perverse (Pr 16:30) ; il est indécent de faire son éloge de ses propres lèvres (Pr 27:2) ; le formaliste honore Dieu « du bout des lèvres » (Esa 29:13, Mt 15:8) ; la séductrice a des lèvres qui « distillent le miel » (Pr 5:3) ; au contraire, la médisante ou le calomniateur sécrètent de leurs lèvres un venin de serpent (Ps 140:4, Ro 3:13) ; les lèvres de l'insensé provoquent la querelle et lui sont un piège (Pr 18:6,8) ; il y a sur les lèvres du méchant comme un feu consumant (Pr 16:27).

Les lèvres peuvent même représenter la langue qu'elles parlent. L'hébreu dit : « Toute la terre avait une même lèvre », c-à-d, un même langage (Ge 11:1). Les « lèvres étrangères » sont celles qui parlent une langue inconnue (Esa 28:11 33:19,1Co 14:21).

Par analogie, comme nous parlons des lèvres d'une plaie, l'hébreu appelle lèvres :

les bords d'un bassin (1Ro 7:26), de la mer (Ge 22:17), d'un fleuve (Ge 41:3) ; le rebord d'un autel (Eze 43:13) ; la bordure, l'ourlet d'un vêtement (Ex 28:33), d'une tenture (Ex 26:4) ; les abords ou frontières d'un territoire (Jug 7:22).
