MAHANAÏM

(hébreu Makhanâyim [cf. Yeroucha-lâyim, Ephrâyitn, Mitsrâyim, etc., formes de locatif et non de duel] =le Camp). Ville forte à l'Est du Jourdain, dans les monts de Galaad, à la frontière de Manassé et de Gad, dans le lot de cette dernière tribu. Mentionnée plusieurs fois : Ge 32:2 dans l'histoire de Jacob, où une légende très ancienne essaye d'en expliquer le nom ; Jos 21:26-30 (répartition du territoire), et Jos 21:38 (cf. 1Ch 6:65) où elle est cédée aux Lévites ; d'après 2Sa 2:8,12-29, Saül étant mort, Abner y installe la cour et le nouveau souverain Isboseth ; d'après 2Sa 17:24,27 (cf 1Ro 2:8) David s'y établit et y attend l'issue de la lutte contre Absalom : elle devait donc être d'une certaine importance et capable d'offrir une résistance sérieuse en cas de siège ; enfin, ce qui corrobore cette supposition, Salomon y place un de ses préfets (1Ro 4:14).

Malgré les objections de quelques voyageurs, il semble que l'on ait raison de retrouver Mahanaïm dans les ruines de Makhna ou Makhnè ou encore Mikhnè, à environ 30 km. au Nord du Nahr ez-Zerka (Jabbok) ; la concordance des noms et des données géographiques rend cette hypothèse très plausible. Ca 7:1, où quelques traducteurs trouvent la mention de Mahanaïm, repose sur une erreur de lecture des Massorètes (makhanâyim pour makhanîm)
