MALACHIE

Dans nos Bibles françaises, Malachie est le dernier livre de l'A.T., le dernier des douze petits Prophètes. Mais pour rétablir la perspective de l'histoire littéraire, il faut se souvenir que la Bible hébraïque fait suivre le Canon des Prophètes du Canon des Écrits, ce qui est un souvenir mieux conservé de la composition de l'A. T, (voir Canon de l'A.T.).

On peut diviser le livre de Malachie en deux parties principales : dans la première (Mal 1:2-2:16), le prophète se fait l'accusateur des prêtres et du peuple en stigmatisant les abus commis ; dans la seconde (Mal 2:17-4:6), le prophète annonce la venue du Jour de l'Éternel.

Contenu du livre.

L'introduction (Mal 1:2-5) proclame l'amour de l'Éternel pour son peuple, et en donne pour preuve l'humiliation du peuple frère, Édom.

Le prophète s'adresse à ceux qui offrent des victimes indignes de Dieu (Mal 1:6,9) ; il vaudrait mieux qu'il n'y eût pas d'offrandes (Mal 1:10) ; parmi toutes les nations on offre à l'Éternel un sacrifice pur qui honore son nom (Mal 1:11) ; les prêtres, complices des offrandes souillées, méprisent la part qui leur revient (Mal 1:12,14). Le prophète est porteur d'un terrible message de condamnation contre les prêtres infidèles (Mal 2:1,3) ; l'Éternel avait établi Lévi comme gardien de la Loi et dispensateur de l'enseignement religieux (Mal 2:4,7) ; les prêtres actuels, corrompus, sont méprisés (Mal 2:8 et suivant). Enfin le prophète dénonce un double crime commis par les Israélites : les mariages avec les femmes étrangères (Mal 2:10,12), facilités par la répudiation abusive des femmes israélites (Mal 2:13,16).

L'annonce de la venue du Jour de l'Éternel (voir art.) est faite sous la forme d'une double polémique avec les croyants découragés. Croire que l'Éternel ne punit pas le mal est une impiété (Mal 2:17). L'Éternel va envoyer son messager (son ange) pour préparer sa venue (Mal 3:1). Le Jour de l'Éternel sera redoutable ; il apportera la purification des fils de Lévi (Mal 3:2) et la condamnation des méchants de toute espèce (Mal 3:5). L'Éternel est fidèle et patient (Mal 3:6), il veut la conversion de son peuple (Mal 3:7). La fidélité du peuple à payer la dîme et à apporter les offrandes prescrites fera éclater la fidélité et la bonté de l'Éternel (Mal 3:13,15). La superbe des méchants induit les croyants à douter de Dieu (Mal 3:13,15) ; mais devant l'Éternel est un « livre de souvenir » qui contient les noms des fidèles (Mal 3:16 et suivant) destinés à être protégés par la faveur divine au Jour de l'Éternel (Mal 3:17 et suivant) ; la colère de l'Éternel consumera les méchants (Mal 4:1), tandis que le soleil de justice éclairera les justes (Mal 4:2 et suivant).

Le livre se termine par une exhortation à observer la Loi de Moïse (Mal 4:4) et l'annonce de la venue du prophète Élie avant l'irruption du Jour de l'Éternel (Mal 4:5 et suivant).

Auteur.

L'auteur du livre de Malachie demeure un inconnu pour nous ; nous ne possédons aucun détail biographique nous permettant de le rattacher à un fait historique précis. Certains même pensent que le livre de Malachie est l'oeuvre d'un prophète anonyme, circonstance qui n'enlèverait rien à la valeur religieuse de notre écrit ! A l'appui de cette opinion on allègue que le Targum indique Esdras comme auteur du livre de Malachie, et que le nom Maleâki de Mal 1:1 aurait été emprunté à Mal 3:1 (où il est trad. : mon messager), pour désigner le prophète anonyme par sa fonction d'envoyé de l'Éternel (cf. le terme de maleak =ange, ou envoyé, appliqué au prophète Ag 1:13). C'est ce que semblent avoir compris les LXX, qui traduisent Mal 1:1: « par l'organe de son ange » (maleâkô lu pour Maleâki)  ; seulement, quand les LXX donnent le titre du livre, ils écrivent Malachias, ce qui est un nom propre signifiant « Ange (ou Envoyé) de Jéhovah ». Le texte hébreu porte partout Maleâki, ce qui signifie « mon ange » ou « mon envoyé », et l'on doit sous-entendre que c'est Jéhovah qui envoie. Or, nous avons précisément un nom hébreu sous deux formes semblables à celles qui nous occupent : la même personne est nommée Abija dans 2Ch 29:1 et Abi dans 2Ro 18:2. Ainsi nous pouvons conclure que Maleâki de Mal 1:1 est bien un nom propre qui signifie « Ange (ou Envoyé) de Jéhovah ».

Mais cela ne lève pas le voile, et nous ne savons rien de la vocation ni de la vie du prophète, bien que ce nom figure dans la tradition rabbinique parmi les membres de la Grande Synagogue, à côté d'Aggée et de Zacharie.

Étant donné le grand rôle que jouent au point de vue religieux les noms symboliques dans la littérature prophétique, nous ne pouvons pas écarter l'idée que son nom (Ange ou Envoyé de Jéhovah) aurait eu dans la vie intérieure du prophète l'importance d'une révélation sur sa vocation et sur le message qui lui était confié.

Date du livre.

On en est réduit à chercher à quelle situation historique s'applique le message du prophète. Mais il ne faut pas se dissimuler ce qu'il y a d'artificiel et d'arbitraire à faire dépendre trop étroitement la pensée et l'activité d'un prophète des idées et des besoins de son époque : l'Esprit souffle où il veut.

Le gouverneur de Jérusalem est appelé pèkhâ (Mal 1:8) ; c'est le titre officiel du représentant du suzerain perse (Ag 1:1,14 2:21, Ne 5:14,18 12:26). Nous sommes donc dans la période de la domination perse en Palestine (538-332 av. J. -C).

Il ne semble pas que le retour de l'exil soit au premier plan de l'horizon de Malachie. Pour prouver que l'Éternel aime Israël, le prophète n'en appelle pas à la restauration du peuple déporté, mais à la ruine d'Édom, le peuple frère (Mal 1:2,5). Cette ruine est présentée comme définitive malgré les tentatives des Édomites de relever leur pays. C'est la situation qui est annoncée par le prophète Abdias, et il faut y voir sans doute le début des conquêtes arabes à partir du V e siècle avant J. -C. ; Édom a dû subir un premier désastre au moment où Malachie prophétise. On voit déjà l'importance de l'élément arabe en Palestine quand Néhémie doit lutter avec Guésem (Ne 2:19), bien que le premier témoignage positif de l'établissement des arabes nabatéens à Pétra (voir ce mot) soit de l'année 312 av. J. -C. (Diodore, XIX, 94).

Nous connaissons par les livres d'Esdras et de Néhémie la situation de la communauté israélite à Térusalem au milieu du V e siècle ; il ne s'agit plus de bâtir le Temple, mais de relever les murailles et les maisons de la ville sainte. Il faut encore réorganiser la communauté religieuse et le culte. Esdras et Néhémie auront à lutter contre les négligences du clergé et les abus des mariages avec les femmes étrangères. C'est aussi le point de vue de Malachie.

On est généralement d'accord pour fixer la composition du livre de Malachie au milieu du V e siècle av. J. -C. Il nous semble que le prophète doit avoir appartenu à ces milieux fidèles qui n'ont jamais manqué en Israël, fermement attachés à la Loi de Moïse. Tandis que dans l'exil Esdras et les scribes babyloniens maintenaient le culte de la Loi, il devait y avoir à Jérusalem des cercles pieux que scandalisaient les impiétés des habitants de la capitale. Malachie nous a transmis la protestation de leur fidélité qui a permis le succès de la restauration d'Esdras-Néhémie en 444 av. J. -C, l'alliance solennelle racontée Ne 8:10.

Valeur littéraire et religieuse.

Le livre de Malachie est l'écho de la prédication orale du prophète. Malachie argumente avec ses contradicteurs, il énonce une objection et la réfute dans la forme d'une discussion d'école. On sent que l'âge du scribe a commencé. Cela donne quelque lourdeur à son style et ne permet qu'une série de courts développements encadrés de points d'interrogation. Ce n'est plus le souffle prophétique de la grande époque.

Le livre de Malachie est un témoin intéressant pour la période de la restauration d'Esdras-Néhémie : il nous montre les tendances profondes qui vont se faire jour dans l'histoire du judaïsme. Malgré la terrible secousse de l'exil, l'orgueil du peuple juif n'est pas abattu : il se sent le peuple élu. Malachie fonde sur l'élection gratuite de Jacob et sur l'amour de l'Éternel que ne justifie aucune vertu particulière les obligations des Israélites vis-à-vis de Dieu. Mais le prophète doit reprocher âprement leurs infidélités à ses compatriotes ; il est dans la ligne des prophètes antérieurs dont il semble résumer le message dans Mal 3:5, condamnation de ceux qui ne craignent pas l'Éternel et se laissent aller à la magie, au parjure, aux iniquités sociales.

Malachie a surtout un grand souci de la pureté du culte. L'influence d'Ézéchiel a été profonde sur la piété exilique et postexilique. Malachie annonce

l'époque où les obligations rituelles vont passer au premier plan de la piété israélite jusqu'à en faire un joug écrasant. Cependant un texte offre quelques difficultés d'interprétation. Malachie parle d'un sacrifice universel qui honore l'Éternel (Mal 1:11). La théologie catholique salue dans le texte de Malachie la prophétie de la Messe, ce que nous ne pouvons accepter. Il faut remarquer que la centralisation exclusive du culte à Jérusalem n'a jamais été réalisée parfaitement. Nous savons que les Israélites ont eu avant l'exil d'importantes colonies à l'étranger, et nous connaissons par les papyrus d'Éléphantine le Temple de Yahou, dans lequel on offrait en Egypte des sacrifices à l'Éternel. Jer 44 nous a conservé le souvenir de cette situation des Juifs de la Diaspora égyptienne. L'oracle de Esa 19:18-25 parle de cinq villes d'Egypte qui parleront la langue de Canaan, et auront un autel pour l'Éternel. Malachie devait connaître l'existence de ces communautés, et peut-être y a-t-il dans ces paroles un écho atténué de la lutte entre le particularisme palestinien, jugé infidèle et corrompu, et l'universalisme des grands prophètes. Certains vont même jusqu'à penser que Malachie ferait recueillir par l'Éternel le culte offert au Dieu du ciel. Il est certain qu'il y a eu dans la pensée postexilique un courant spiritualiste dont témoigne Esa 66:1,4 ; il faudra attendre Jésus pour le voir s'épanouir et triompher. L'ensemble du livre de Malachie ne permet pas d'aller jusque-là, et il vaut mieux penser que Mal 1:10 et suivant oppose le culte souillé de Jérusalem au culte de la Diaspora dans les bét tephillim =maisons de prière.

Malachie reste fidèle à l'eschatologie prophétique dans les développements qu'il consacre au Jour de l'Éternel. Ce qu'il apporte de nouveau, c'est la notion du retour du prophète Élie ; Jésus se référera aux textes de Malachie quand il indiquera que Jean-Baptiste est l'Elie qui devait venir (Mt 11:14 17:11 et suivant, etc.). Le livre du souvenir (Mal 3:16) reparaîtra dans l'Apocalypse de Jean. (Ap 20:12) La piété chrétienne salue en Jésus-Christ (Lu 1:78) le Soleil de justice qui porte la santé dans ses rayons.       17 But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.
      18 But since we left off burning incense to the queen of the sky, and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.
      19 When we burned incense to the queen of the sky, and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her, without our husbands?
      20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men, and to the women, even to all the people who had given him an answer, saying,
      21 The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, didn't Yahweh remember them, and didn't it come into his mind?
      22 so that Yahweh could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which you have committed; therefore your land has become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.
      23 Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil has happened to you, as it is this day.
      24 Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of Yahweh, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt:
      25 Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, saying, You and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her: establish then your vows, and perform your vows.

      28 Those who escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, shall know whose word shall stand, mine, or theirs.
      29 This shall be the sign to you, says Yahweh, that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:
      30 Thus says Yahweh, Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy, and sought his life.

      6 "A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a father, then where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is the respect due me? Says Yahweh of Armies to you, priests, who despise my name. You say, 'How have we despised your name?'
      7 You offer polluted bread on my altar. You say, 'How have we polluted you?' In that you say, 'Yahweh's table contemptible.'
      8 When you offer the blind for sacrifice, isn't that evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, isn't that evil? Present it now to your governor! Will he be pleased with you? Or will he accept your person?" says Yahweh of Armies.
      9 "Now, please entreat the favor of God , that he may be gracious to us. With this, will he accept any of you?" says Yahweh of Armies.
      10 "Oh that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain! I have no pleasure in you," says Yahweh of Armies, "neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
      11 For from the rising of the sun even to the going down of the same, my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering: for my name is great among the nations," says Yahweh of Armies.
      12 "But you profane it, in that you say, 'Yahweh's table is polluted, and its fruit, even its food, is contemptible.'
      13 You say also, 'Behold, what a weariness it is!' and you have sniffed at it," says Yahweh of Armies; "and you have brought that which was taken by violence, the lame, and the sick; thus you bring the offering. Should I accept this at your hand?" says Yahweh.
      14 "But the deceiver is cursed, who has in his flock a male, and vows, and sacrifices to the Lord a blemished thing; for I am a great King," says Yahweh of Armies, "and my name is awesome among the nations."

      Malachie 2

      1 "Now, you priests, this commandment is for you.
      2 If you will not listen, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory to my name," says Yahweh of Armies, "then will I send the curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have cursed them already, because you do not lay it to heart.
      3 Behold, I will rebuke your seed, and will spread dung on your faces, even the dung of your feasts; and you will be taken away with it.
      4 You will know that I have sent this commandment to you, that my covenant may be with Levi," says Yahweh of Armies.
      5 "My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him that he might be reverent toward me; and he was reverent toward me, and stood in awe of my name.
      6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity.
      7 For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of Yahweh of Armies.
      8 But you have turned aside out of the way. You have caused many to stumble in the law. You have corrupted the covenant of Levi," says Yahweh of Armies.
      9 "Therefore I have also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according to the way you have not kept my ways, but have had respect for persons in the law.
      10 Don't we all have one father? Hasn't one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of our fathers?
      11 Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the holiness of Yahweh which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.
      12 Yahweh will cut off, to the man who does this, him who wakes and him who answers, out of the tents of Jacob, and him who offers an offering to Yahweh of Armies.
      13 This again you do: you cover the altar of Yahweh with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, because he doesn't regard the offering any more, neither receives it with good will at your hand.
      14 Yet you say, 'Why?' Because Yahweh has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously, though she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant.
      15 Did he not make you one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? Why one? He sought a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let no one deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
      16 For I hate divorce," says Yahweh, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with violence!" says Yahweh of Armies. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don't deal treacherously.
      17 You have wearied Yahweh with your words. Yet you say, 'How have we wearied him?' In that you say, 'Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of Yahweh, and he delights in them;' or 'Where is the God of justice?'

      1 "Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, behold, he comes!" says Yahweh of Armies.
      2 "But who can endure the day of his coming? And who will stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire, and like launderer's soap;
      3 and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer to Yahweh offerings in righteousness.
      4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasant to Yahweh, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years.
      5 I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against the perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and who deprive the foreigner of justice, and don't fear me," says Yahweh of Armies.
      6 "For I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
      7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my ordinances, and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you," says Yahweh of Armies. "But you say, 'How shall we return?'
      8 Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me! But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In tithes and offerings.
      9 You are cursed with the curse; for you rob me, even this whole nation.
      10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and test me now in this," says Yahweh of Armies, "if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough for.
      11 I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast its fruit before its time in the field," says Yahweh of Armies.
      12 "All nations shall call you blessed, for you will be a delightful land," says Yahweh of Armies.
      13 "Your words have been stout against me," says Yahweh. "Yet you say, 'What have we spoken against you?'
      14 You have said, 'It is vain to serve God;' and 'What profit is it that we have followed his instructions, and that we have walked mournfully before Yahweh of Armies?
      15 Now we call the proud happy; yes, those who work wickedness are built up; yes, they tempt God, and escape.'
      16 Then those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another; and Yahweh listened, and heard, and a book of memory was written before him, for those who feared Yahweh, and who honored his name.
      17 They shall be mine," says Yahweh of Armies, "my own possession in the day that I make, and I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.
      18 Then you shall return and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him who serves God and him who doesn't serve him.
