(hébreu kèbèch ou hadom, grec hupopodion). Les anciens connaissaient naturellement les escabeaux ou tabourets servant d'appui pour les pieds d'une personne assise ; la Bible cite le marchepied d'or du trône d'ivoire de Salomon (2Ch 9:18) et le marchepied du membre d'une « assemblée » méprisant pour le pauvre (Jas 2:3) ; dans ces deux passages c'est donc un objet de luxe.

Deux papyrus égyptiens de contrats de mariage (II° siècle) mentionnent parmi les meubles appartenant à l'épouse « un siège avec le marchepied ». Les autres textes bibliques mentionnant le marchepied (l'hébreu disait : le marchepied des pieds ; nos anciennes versions conservaient ce pléonasme) en font un symbole de la domination souveraine de Dieu, sur la terre (Esa 66:1, Mt 5:35, Ac 7:49), sur la cité de son temple (La 2:1, Vers. Syn. : la ville où ses pieds reposent, Sg. : son marchepied), sur l'arche de son alliance (1Ch 28:2, cf. Ps 99:5 132:7) ; conception évidemment inspirée par l'attitude du roi assis sur son trône ou debout sur son marchepied.

Dans Ps 110:1 il est fait allusion aux pratiques humiliantes des conquérants antiques envers leurs ennemis vaincus : ils les faisaient parfois étendre par terre côte à côte et leur posaient le pied sur la nuque ou passaient sur leur corps, à pied ou à cheval ; (cf. Jos 10:24, Ps 66:12, Esa 51:23) ce Ps 110, psaume messianique, retient ce geste comme signe de victoire complète et définitive sur tous les ennemis du Messie, et c'est dans ce sens qu'il est cité plusieurs fois dans le N.T. (Mr 12:36, Lu 20:43, cf. Mt 22:44,1Co 15:25, Heb 10:13, etc.) ;
