PATIENCE

L'idée de patience est ordinairement rendue dans nos versions de l'A. T, par le terme « lent à la colère », qui traduit une expression hébraïque signifiant littéralement : « longueur de souffle » ou « de narines » (voir Nez). Dans le N.T. le terme macrothumia a pour traduction exacte « longanimité » plutôt que « patience ». Mais dans le langage courant, patienter (du latin pati =souffrir) n'est pas seulement savoir souffrir : c'est aussi savoir attendre.

Patience divine.

Dieu est patient, parce qu'il a pitié de ses créatures et veut leur laisser le temps de se repentir (No 14:18, Ps 86:15, Joe 2:13, Jon 4:2, Na 1:3). Cependant l'A.T., qui n'a pas connu parfaitement l'amour de Dieu, ne donne pas non plus une place essentielle à la patience divine, qui est une forme de cet amour (voir, dans les Apocr., Sir 5:4 18:11, Sag 15:1). Jésus, au contraire, révèle la richesse de la patience divine dans les paraboles de l'enfant prodigue (Lu 15:11), des deux fils (Mt 21:28 et suivants), des vignerons (Mt 21:33 et suivants), du serviteur impitoyable (Mt 18:23 et suivants), de l'ivraie et du bon grain (Mt 13:24 et suivants), du filet (Mt 13:47 et suivants), et surtout du figuier stérile (Lu 13:6-9 ; voir encore Ro 2:4 9:22,1Pi 3:20, 2Pi 3:9-15).

Patience humaine.

La Bible donne des exemples de la patience des serviteurs de Dieu : Abraham (Heb 6:15), Job (Jas 5:11), et en général les hommes de Dieu de l'ancienne alliance (Heb 6:12, Jas 5:10). Les livres sapientiaux la recommandent (Pr 16:32 25:15, Ec 7:8, Sir 2:4, Sag 2:19). Dans le N.T., la patience dans l'épreuve est intimement liée à la foi et à l'espérance (Ro 8:25). Elle est une des conditions du salut final (Lu 21:19), en même temps qu'un fruit de l'Esprit (Ga 5:22). L'apôtre Paul, qui l'a pratiquée lui-même (2Co 6:4 12:13,2Ti 3:10), la recommande fréquemment à ses lecteurs (Ro 12:13, 2Th 1:4 3:5, Tit 2:2 ; voir encore Jas 1:3, Ap 15:8 14:12). Le chrétien doit aussi exercer la patience envers ses frères, et cela pour répondre à la patience de Dieu à son égard (Mt 18:29,35). La patience est une des formes essentielles de l'amour fraternel (1Co 13:4, Eph 4:2, Col 3:12,1Th 5:14). Jésus-Christ est l'exemple parfait de la patience divine, de la patience dans l'épreuve (Ac 8:32) et de la patience envers les hommes dont il supporta jusqu'à la mort l'incompréhension et la haine. (cf. Mr 9:19)
