PIED

Les pieds, organes de la marche, doivent être fermes, résistants, d'aplomb (Ps 91:12, cf. Mt 4:6, Ps 94:18 121:3, etc.) ; les pieds d'argile de la statue, brisés par une pierre, sont cause que la statue tout entière est brisée (Da 2:33 et suivant). Les pieds sont solidaires des autres membres (1Co 12:15) ; parfois ils représentent le marcheur lui-même. Au figuré ils symbolisent la marche morale, la conduite (Ps 26:12 36:12 119:101, Lu 1:79, Ro 3:15, Heb 12:13) ; et cette image, souvent affaiblie quand nos versions traduisent : pas, au lieu de : pieds, joue un grand rôle dans la langue et la pensée des auteurs bibliques : (cf. Ps 1:1) le juste doit craindre pièges et filets tendus devant ses pieds (Ps 25:15, Jer 18:22 etc.), prendre garde à ses pieds (Ec 5:1), les préserver de broncher et de glisser (Ps 73:2), les garder de toute chute (Ps 56:13). La lumière éclairant leur chemin, c'est la Parole de Dieu (Ps 119:105). Les pieds révèlent les dispositions de l'âme, celles de l'insensé, du malfaiteur (Pr 1:15 et suivant, Sir 21:22), des porteurs de l'Évangile (Esa 52:7), de l'Évangile de paix (Eph 6:15). Couper le pied qui fait tomber dans le mal, c'est sacrifier son péché dans le don de l'âme à Dieu (Mt 18:8).

La Bible fait allusion à maints usages antiques : bijoux pour les pieds (Esa 3:16,20) ; irrigation des champs au moyen de roues actionnées avec les pieds (De 11:10) ; roue du potier tournant au pied (Sir 38:29) ; mesure de surface (De 2:5 ; traduit pouce dans Ac 7:5). Les prisonniers avaient parfois aux pieds des chaînes ou des entraves (Sir 6:24 21:19, Ac 16:24). Les crucifiés avaient les pieds cloués à la croix comme les mains, ou seulement attachés par des cordes (voir Crucifiement). Les esclaves allaient nu-pieds (Esa 20:2,4) ; dans l'épreuve ou le deuil, en se couvrant la tête on se déchaussait (2Sa 15:30, Eze 24:17). Au contraire, la chaussure, qui foule le sol, était l'emblème de la propriété : (Ps 60:10) le vendeur d'un terrain la donnait symboliquement à l'acheteur (Ru 4:7 et suivant) ; en cas de contestation, la partie lésée avait le droit d'arracher son soulier au défaillant, comme gage de sa renonciation (De 25:9). Le port habituel de simples sandales ne protégeait pas les pieds de la poussière ou de la boue. De là l'usage, quand on entrait chez quelqu'un ou en la présence de Dieu, de se déchausser et même de se laver les pieds, par propreté et par respect (Ex 3:5 30:19, Jos 5:15 etc.). Laver les pieds d'un hôte, besogne d'esclave (1Sa 25:41, Jn 13:14), était devoir d'hospitalité (Ge 18:4, Lu 7:38,44, Jn 12:3 13:5,1Ti 5:10). Par contre, secouer la poussière de ses pieds contre quelqu'un, c'était rompre avec lui et le maudire (Mt 10:14, Ac 13:51). Voir Soulier.

Le pied, partie inférieure du corps, est d'autant plus méprisable qu'il est plus éloigné de la tête, du chef ; en même temps c'est sur lui que porte tout le poids du corps debout. L'homme s'en servira donc pour affirmer sa domination, son dédain ou sa victoire (voir Marchepied). On disait d'un chef qu'il avait son peuple ou ses soldats sous son pied, c'est-à-dire sous son commandement (sens littéral dans Ex 11:8, Jug 4:10 8:5). Le vainqueur mettait son pied sur le cou du vaincu (Jos 10:24, cf. les bas-reliefs égyptiens et assyriens ; Ps 8:7 47:4, Mt 22:44, Ro 16:20,1Co 15:25,27, Eph 1:22, Heb 2:8). Que dire de l'impie qui prétendrait traiter ainsi le Fils de Dieu ? (Heb 10:29) Inversement, le suppliant, le repentant se jettent aux pieds de celui qu'ils espèrent fléchir (Est 8:3, Mr 5:22 7:25, Apoc, 1:17) ; ils vont jusqu'à lui embrasser les pieds (2Ro 4:27, Lu 7:38) ; les malades sont déposés en suppliants aux pieds de Jésus (Mt 15:30) ; les disciples sont assis humblement aux pieds de leur maître (De 33:3, Lu 8:35 10:39, Ac 22:3).
