La pluie est une chute de fines gouttelettes d'eau. Lorsqu'un nuage (voir ce mot) subit un abaissement de température, il s'ensuit une forte condensation d'eau en son sein : les gouttelettes qui le composent augmentent alors plus ou moins de volume et sont entraînées vers le sol sous forme de pluie.

La pluie peut être extrêmement fine et tomber par conséquent avec douceur et lenteur ; elle peut au contraire tomber précipitamment en fortes gouttes. Elle est un élément essentiel du climat d'un pays : c'est elle qui apporte à la terre l'humidité sans laquelle aucune végétation n'est possible ; c'est elle qui alimente les cours d'eau, etc.

On évalue la pluie en hauteur annuelle d'eau tombée en un lieu : en France, il tombe environ 600 à 650 mm. d'eau par an. En Palestine, la quantité d'eau de pluie est un peu supérieure : 700 mm. environ. Chaque pays a un régime de pluie particulier, qui est dû à sa situation géographique et à sa configuration physique : les vents jouent un grand rôle dans les régimes pluviaux.

En Palestine, on divise l'année en deux périodes d'après les chutes d'eau : (Jer 5:24) une saison pluviale qui débute à la fin de l'été, vers novembre, et se continue jusqu'en mars-avril ; et une saison sèche, au cours de laquelle il n'y a presque plus de pluie (Jas 5:7). Les premières pluies sont orageuses et amènent de grandes chutes d'eau (De 11:14) ; le temps s'éclaircit ensuite un peu, et c'est à la fin de la saison pluvieuse qu'à nouveau l'eau tombe en grande abondance et à plusieurs reprises. Ce régime est assez favorable à l'agriculture, en ce sens que les premières pluies détrempent et ramollissent le sol (Ps 68:10) que les chaleurs de l'été ont littéralement cuit. L'agriculteur peut alors labourer les champs, les ensemencer, avant les pluies de printemps (Job 29:23, Jer 3:3, Os 6:3, Za 10:1), qui viennent à point pour arroser les semailles (Esa 30:23). Bible. La pluie est essentiellement bienfaisante (Ps 65:11 68:10, Le 26:1, De 28:12,2Sa 23:4). Elle est souvent attendue avec impatience et demandée à l'Éternel (Am 4:7, Jas 5:7,18), car c'est l'Éternel qui fait pleuvoir (Ge 2:5 7:4, Mt 5:45, Jer 14:22). C'est un grave châtiment que l'absence de pluie (De 28:24,1Ro 8:35,2Ch 6:26 7:13,1Ro 17:1, Esa 5:6, Ap 11:6). Mais une pluie venant hors de saison peut être aussi une punition, car elle cause de grands ravages (1Sa 12:17, Eze 13:13, Mt 7:25). Enfin l'Éternel peut faire tomber des nuages, de la grêle au lieu de pluie (Ps 105:32, Ex 9:18). La pluie peut tomber d'une façon inaccoutumée et provoquer des inondations : c'est un déluge (Ge 7:12).

Des pluies extraordinaires sont relatées dans la Bible : l'Éternel fit pleuvoir du soufre (Ge 19:24, Lu 17:29). Sur Sodome et Gomorrhe, cette chute de soufre et de feu se fit par un procédé différent de celui de la pluie. L'Éternel fait pleuvoir des charbons sur les méchants (Ps 11:6). Enfin l'Éternel fit pleuvoir le pain du ciel, la manne, pour son peuple au désert (Ex 16:4, Ps 78:24). H. L.
