Cette partie du corps humain est mentionnée plusieurs fois (Da 2:32, 2Ma 3:19, Jn 13:25 21:20 Sg., Ap 15:6), notamment dans l'expression : se frapper la poitrine, qui désigne un geste de deuil (voir ce mot). En ce cas, du reste, le verbe gr. koptesthaï, comme l'hébreu sâphad, est employé sans complément et signifie litt. : se frapper (Mt 24:30, Lu 23:27) ; il est parfois simplement traduit : se lamenter (Mt 11:17, Lu 8:52, Apoc, 1:7 18:9, cf. Ge 23:2, etc.).

Dans Lu 18:13, c'est une autre locution grecque, à laquelle correspond exactement la traduction : se frapper la poitrine (tupteïn to stêthos), qui décrit le geste d'humble repentir du péager, dans la parabole connue.

Dans Jer 31:18, l'hébreu dit : se frapper la cuisse (voir ce mot).

Dans les autres cas où il est question de la poitrine (gr. stêthos ou kolpos), nos versions disent ordinairement : sein (voir ce mot).

Dans le rituel sacerdotal, la poitrine (khâzèh.) des animaux sacrifiés faisait partie des offrandes qu'on « agitait », ou « balançait », au-dessus des charbons de l'autel, en signe de consécration à l'Éternel, pour les réserver ensuite à ses prêtres (Ex 29:26 Le 7:30,31,34 8:20 9:20 10:14 No 6:20 18:18 etc.)
